Can Allopurinol Be Taken For Acute Gout?

default
Posted on Tue, 27 Dec 2016
Question: My husband was prescribed Indomethacin. He had a couple of gouty episode and I was expecting him to be treated after with Allopurinol but was given an this instead. I have Taken Naproxin for years because of arthritis and also take Allopurinol because I had gout caused by a diuretic. I don't understand why he is being treated differently and with something that can cause ulcers if he is not careful. I'm thinking twice about my doctor as it is but this is an issue. Was wondering about your thoughts.

Brief Answer:
Allopurinol is not given in acute gout.

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thank you for asking HCM.

I have gone through your query. Allopurinol is not recommended for acute gout episode. NSAIDs like indomethacin or ibuprofen , or colchicine is given at the time of acute gout. Only when acute gout symptoms subside uricosuric drugs like allopurinol is given for long term.
Take NSAIDs only after food and take it for a short duration like one week. Also take acid lowering drugs like Ranitidine ( zantac ) or Esomeprazole ( Nexium ) when taking NSAIDs. This will decrease the chance of ulcer or gastritis.

Let me know if anything not clear.
I am happy to help you.
Thanks.
