Hi XXXXXXX

Thank you for your query.

It shall take some time for the running nose, cough and fever to settle down. With paracetamol the temperature shall come down for 3-4 hours and rise again as the effect of the medicine wears off. Azithral is an antibiotic and will act only if there is a bacterial infection. A viral infection shall takes its own course. Hence, you should continue giving mucolite. Nasal spray should be used sparingly.

I hope I have answered your query to your satisfaction. Please feel free to revert back in case you need any clarifications or would like to share more facts of the case.

Wishing your daughter an early recovery.

Hi Dr,

Thanks for the reply.
But should I continue with Azithrol, how to know is it a bacterial infection or viral?previously her mucous coming out of nose was thick and yellow now after mucolite it becomes liquid like water. now is there any way to stop running nose ? please suggest me some medicine for stopping her cough as it really hurts her at night. She vomits the food, now her stool becomes soft and it tends to watery, to prevent that any medicine i can administer ? what she wud take at dinner to keep well and no gas.Could it be an allergy attack ? shud I start some medicine like anti histamine.
Please let me know i am very worried

Hi XXXXXXX

Thanks for the update.

Yes, continue with Azitrol. It is very difficult to say whether it is viral or bacterial without investigations. Most of the upper respiratory tract infections start as viral but develop superadded bacterial infection. Thick yellow nasal discharge is suggestive of bacterial infection.

You can add a cough syrup (about 2.5 ml.) three times a day to reduce the running nose along with steam inhalation. Cough syrups do contain anti-histamines like medicines and there is no need to give any more medication. It is unlikely to be allergic cough.

With upper respiratory tract infections (URTI) some children do develop loose motions and there is no need to give any medicines for that. Just ensure that she is adequately hydrated. You can give her warm soups which is going to soothe her throat and provide fluids. Give her small portions so that she does not vomit.

I can understand your dilemma but you need to be patient as URTI takes some time to resolve.

I hope I have responded to your queries to your satisfaction. Please feel free to revert back in case you need more clarifications.

Hi Dr,

You are right, she is attacked in URTI.As I am in Australia and there Doctor never prescribe any medicine, which is very difficult for puzzled parents like me to decide what to do. I brought these medicine while coming from India. I dont have any cough syrup kind of thing. I have only mucolite.I know that it thins the mucus, should I use that ? Here for Runny nose one medicine I know is available for child of 1 yr is Bauer's Runny nose. could you please suggest me should I start use that ? Please specify some cough syrup medicine from India so that I can bring here ?

Hi,

Thank you for the update.

What you are doing is absolutely right. However if there is no improvement in 24-48 hours then it is advisable to get your daughter examined by a doctor and take medicines rather than treat yourself. As I had mentioned in my earlier post you can continue mucolite and steam inhalation.

I am not in a position to suggest about Brauer's Children's Runny Nose Relief as it is a homeopathic medicines about which I am not aware.

You can arrange for Syp. Recofast from India and give in early URTI.

I hope I have responded to your queries. Please feel free to revert back in case you need any clarifications.

Wishing your daughter an early recovery.

Hello, I recently traveled up to Mammoth (elevation between 7900 - 8900 ft) for the Memorial Day Weekend. We arrived on Friday evening. I felt fine all day Saturday and Sunday. After going in to bed on Sunday night I was restless and had a hard time sleeping. I started shivering and had chills. I think I started to scare myself and started having some anxiety which was making me feel like I wasn t breathing right - though I know I wasn t really breathless, didn t have shortness of breath nor was my heart rate irregular. I ended up taking my temperature at it was just under 100 degrees (normal for me is in the 97-low 98 degrees). I could tell my temperature rose a bit more as I got really warm then sweaty. I felt very dehydrated and kept drinking a lot of fluids. I was somewhat dizzy and felt a slighly nauseated. I couldn t sleep for most of the night. I took some ibuprofin and finally dosed off around 4 in the morning. I woke up around 6/7 am and didn t feel any better. My fever had come back (still low grade) and then I had a headache and body aches. I did start having some chest tightness and aches in my chest area too - similar to when my asthma acts up. As the morning went on I felt a little bit better but still had a headache, body aches and low grade fever. We left the area around noon and went back home (which is close to sea level). I felt much better still had some of the symptoms. My fever rose to almost 101 during the night (last night) but dropped after taking ibuprofin this morning. I still have had a slight headache but it and the aches have improved. Temperature hasn t risen since the night again. Question - does this sound more like a flu or virus or could it have been altitude sickness? or something else? Some of the symptoms sound like it could have been but not sure since I did have a fever and it came on after 48 hrs of being at that elevation (we slept at the lower elevation).

I am writing about my 14 year old son, who has been ill repeatedly 4 times for the past 7 weeks. He s been on antibiotics all 4 times, struggles to recover until his antibiotics are nearly gone, finally feels better for a few days and then gets it again. We are wondering if it is valley fever. Can that come with congestion/sinus symptoms? He s been diagnosed with sinus infections each time, but develops not only significant congestion/sinus symtpoms, but also chest pain, horrible coughing, fatigue, sore throat, and is miserable. He has faithfully taken not only strong antibiotics, but prescription strength cough syrup/decongestant, Flonase nasal spray, Zyrtec once a day, and breathing treatments up to 4 times a day, along with vitamin C and lots of fluids. He is otherwise very healthy, but his doctor is concerned that perhaps it is not really sinus infections he has had. I cannot find on the internet where there is a connection between congestion/sinus symptoms and Valley Fever - curious about that as others have asked if he has been tested for it. We live in Phoenix. As a young child he had repeated ear infections, but 4 years ago at age 10 he had his tonsils and adenoids removed, tubes in his ears, and a major sinus surgery. He has been very healthy ever since until now. Any ideas? Thank you verey much!

I have had recent blood samples and urine and stool cultures done. I had typhoid which took months to clear whilst I am in India. I have recently been passing what I know to be part of the superficial intestine (I had a dog who died from parvovirus and he passed the same thing just before his death and which I showed to his vet!) I recently had some diarheoa but not severe. Now, however, just 5 days after the results came back normal, I have a really severe sore throat, chest, back, neck and shoulders. My arms are sore to move and to touch, and covered in mosquito bites. I have severe pain in between my shoulder blades for which I am taking continuous pain killers. My fever is 102 and up to 104, for the past 2 days. I feel like I have severe flu and cannot do anything, even moving my fingers is causing pain!!! Can I have malaria even if my tests came back showing nothing abnormal? My chest hurts to cough, so does my back.
