Question: Hi Doctor, I have a pain in my throat and I am unable to gulp solids. It hurts. I've had a little warm water and no medications so far. just to give a background of myself, I've had my tonsillitis operated around 15 years ago. Please advise.

Need more information.

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

I would like to have some more information before we discuss about your problem. I would like to know:

1. How long have you been suffering with this throat pain?
2. Are you running fever?
3. What other associated complaints do you have ? Specifically do you have runny nose, blocked nose, headache, cough, abdominal pain, vomiting?

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Brief Answer:

Symptomatic treatment.

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

Throat pain and painful swallowing is commonly associated with infection - bacteria.

However such infective condition is associated with other respiratory symptoms including fever, nasal congestion, body pain, headache and so on.

Since you do not have any other symptoms, I would treat you with symptomatic medications:

1. Warm water gargling three times a day. You may add 5ml of chlorhexidine gargling solution to warm glass of water and gargle three times a day
2. Antacid drugs like tab Pan D twice daily before food for a week.

I would monitor the progress of symptoms. In case it worsens, you can follow up.

Hope I have answered your query.

Take care
