Question: Are there any energy drinks that could help return any degree of energy to an 82 year old man? I am in pretty good shape and go to gym for half hour 5 days week, no pain, but end up taking 4 naps per day! Thank you very much! XXXXXXX XXXXXXX ( YYYY@YYYY ) of

Hello,

energy drinks are supposed to provide adequate carbohydrates because they provide energy for muscle activities and perhaps also some stimulating substances like caffeine. They cannot rejuvenate old individuals. Feeling sleepy all day may be caused by various disorders though so you'd better check with your primary care physician for them, starting with:
- thyroid functions tests. TSH should suffice for most cases.
- testosterone deficiency.
- electrolyte disorders (low sodium for example may cause sleepiness)
- anemia. It may cause fatigue and sleepiness among other symptoms.
- investigate for sleep-apnea syndrome, particularly if you're fat and you smoke and you've been told that you snore.
- a review of any drugs you may take. Some of them may cause sleepiness.

So in conclusion, the energy drinks are not supposed to help more than a cup of coffee!
