Are There Any Interactions Between Amoxicillin And SMZ-TMP?

default
Posted on Fri, 8 May 2015
Question: Hi, I have an infection (cellulitis and abscess of finger, unspecified) and have been taking Amoxicillin for 6 days. It helped somewhat. Another urgent care doctor prescribed SMZ-TMP. I have 4 more days to take remaining Amoxicillin. Should I wait until I finish Amoxicillin or I can start SMZ-TMP now? Are there any interractions between these two? This second doctor also gave me an injection of Ceftriaxone (Rocephin) 1mg inj (cefTRIAXone) lidocaine 1% injectable solution.
Thank you.

Brief Answer:
stop amoxicilin

Detailed Answer:
I would stop the amoxicilin and take the SMZ-TMP now. It is much better for cellulitis. It will not cause a problem if you take them together but in any case do not delay in starting the SMZ-TMP. There are no drug interactions between the two drugs. With the injection and new antibiotic your cellulitis should heal up quickly. If it is not see a doctor immediately
I hope you are better soon,
Dr. Robinson
