Are Sore Throat And Fever Symptoms Of HIV Or STD?

default
Posted on Fri, 20 Nov 2015
Question: I had unprotected sex 16 1/2 years ago with a woman (I am a man).Never any symptoms, been sick 5 or 6 days over the past 16 years, routine physicals with blood work (All normal), normal dental checks ups (all normal) yearly eye exams (all normal. No weight loss, got a cold sore 2 years ago went away in 7 days. I never had any sort of new symptoms after the act (Sore throat, swollen glands, fever etc. My body temperature is 97.9 to 98.3 (anything over that I feel like I am running a temp). My doctor checks my lymph glands every time I have a physical (never swollen). I am asking this question now because I had to take a blood test for insurance (life) and I thought I was out of the woods time wise but I have been reading where sometimes it takes 15-20 years for symptoms to show up now. So if you were my family doctor and I told you this what would your initial response be? I am 63 years old male. As far as the woman goes, she asked me "I hope you are clean" so that makes me think she was, was maybe it is guilt on my part that is now haunting me because of the blood test.

Brief Answer:
You are free from HIV/STD and can take up insurance tests

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome to HCM.
Thanks for posting your query.
You can go boldly for your insurance procedures without any hesitation. Sore throat and fever are common symptoms for anybody to get at anytime in the absence of any HIV/STD.
Even in presence of HIV/STD, one can not remain asymptomatic for 10-12 years. It is not true that the symptoms would take more than 15-20 years to appear. Moreover your blood work ups were also within normal limits. So nothing to worry.
