default
Posted on Wed, 25 Jan 2017
Question: My 11 year old daughter, XXXXXXX has asthma. She currently takes Flovent 2Xday and takes her Albuterol before gym class and occasionally when going out in the cold. She doesn't sleep very well, and we have been noticing several black and blue marks on her body, and she has developed a nickel sized bald spot on her scalp. Are these side effects of the medication, or is is something we should take her in to be seen for.
Thank you

Brief Answer:
It doesn't seem to be directly related to drugs.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for writing to Health Care Magic, I am Dr Muhammd Ahmad, I have closely read your question and I understand your concerns for your daughter, I will hereby guide you regarding this health related problem.

The problems you mentioned are not likely to be the side effects of Fluticasone or Albuterole, In my opinion these are separate to that. Yes sometimes when patient is taking steroids, then bruises can develop which can look like blue and black spots and scalp can get attacked by fungus which causes bald portions on scalp but the cause has to be determined by the doctor before treatment can be given.

I would suggest you to consult your primary regarding the problems , you can discuss a referral to a dermatologist to look into the matter. Controlling alopecia (bald spots) is quite easy these days but it would require a dermatologist checkup.

About, sleep you can do a few things, wake your kid up early in the morning, don't let her sleep through the day, she already looks physically active that's great, don't let her use stimulants specially nearing the bed time, stimulants include coffee , caffeine , energy drinks, fizzy drinks chocolate etc.

Every thing seems fine and you do not have to think about changing the medication in a hurry, just discuss this with your doctor. OTC antifungal shampoo can be tried though. Give your daughter foods full of zinc, vitamin C and E, these are essential for good hair and skin health.

I hope this answered your question, if you have more queries, please feel free to ask.

Regards.
