Are Night Sweats, Flaky Skin With Rashes And Chest Pain Signs Of HIV?

Posted on Sat, 2 Jul 2016
Question: Hi, I'm going through worst month of my life and not sure about future. Due to deprivation of intimate life, I started going to massage parlors and recently I've had a unprotected sex with female CSW in asia (received anal prostate massage unprotected, nude body rub, licked her bottom) and later found out that most of the people in there are +ve. After about 2-3 weeks of exposure I have seen following symptoms in my body which concerns me greatest as I've NEVER felt this type of things before ever with my body.

From May 1 to May 15th or so
========================
1) Night sweats for 2 weeks where I needed to change cloths every time
2) Flacky skin where I can't even properly shave as if I clean shave, the rashes would show up.
3) burning skin even day/night during the same time. I never felt those type of burning skin ever...
4) crazy chest pain where I felt i'll almost die with heart attack.
5) too much pain underneath armpits during the same time. Now too much wet armpit with bed smell .
6) tonsillitis (white tonsil stones) in my mouth that just pops out every other day now .
7) too much leg muscle pain everyday specially from knees to ankle in legs
8) underneath of nails has been turned with white dots with almost all nails. I used to have very shiny nails.
9) few times I had unexplained diarrhea
10) I feel like I should have fever but when you put thermometer, it only goes upto 99.
11) I don't feel like eating anything (loss of appetite)
12) I get almost tired by noon where I used to work tirelessly without any issues
13) can't concentrate on anything
14) metallic taste in my mouth (may be because I took iron,b12 supplement for 2 days)
15) anemia type of symptoms

My doc initially gave me anxiety (lorazepam .5mg) and I've been taking that from last 20 days so I think if these are related to anxiety it should work...

NOW, most of those symptoms are gone from last one week Now, These are the major symptoms that I have (I won't describe other small symptoms) started from last week or so ago while other are gone

1) So much leg pain in knee and muscle. I can only feel better in morning and by the noon, I'm not me again. (Fatigue and tiredness even after full healthy nurtitious food throughout the day).
2) I have started getting rashes on head (I found out after hair cut) and on my face that people can visually see if they are closure. If I shave, people would definitely see it right away.
3) From last two days I'm getting headaches for no reason, and CONSTANT RUMBLING sounds in my stomach all day even with I eat twice the food that I used to eat, I mean literally twice...2 protein shake, 2 fruit/veg smoothie tall glass, lunch, dinner, yogurt, banana, milk cereal by bedtime...
4) I'm getting loose stool from last month or so....
5) Red rash type of spots on my scalp and little dots on face....

Can't seem to figure out if these are anxiety , panic attack or HIV related ...:-(

Hello, and thanks for your question.

You list many symptoms and ask if they are more likely caused by anxiety/panic or HIV. I have read over them carefully.

Firstly, if you did not exchange blood, needles, or have unprotected genital contact with the other person's genitals, HIV transmission is not possible. So this is the first thing to consider.

Secondly, you should get regular HIV testing every three months for the next year. If these are persistently negative, then you do not have HIV. I would also get tested for Hepatitis.

Thirdly, while it is possible a couple of these symptoms could be caused by HIV, it is true that ALL of them could be caused by anxiety, which I find to be the most likely explanation. I find it unlikely this is related to HIV, unless you had unprotected sex or exchanged blood. Anxiety however could cause all these symptoms.

OK, I have received unprotected prostate massage (I had hemorrhoids) which can possibly can cause all these. My biggest worry is it all started in not specific order but I totally experienced all these symptoms for 2 good weeks... and continue to have some of it as I listed which makes me more worried. I think at this point after 17 days on anxiety medicine it still sounds like I'm not phlysically what I used to be "-(

Detailed Answer:
Prostate massage with what? Did someone insert a penis into you? If it was just with someone's hands or a sex toy, that cannot cause HIV.

Anxiety can take many weeks or months to treat adequately. Anxiety also causes real physical symptoms. Just because you are still having physical symptoms does not mean anxiety is still not the cause.

Hi Dr.

Ty. it was a prostate massage which I received from her hand/finger while I had hemorrhoids. Let's say if I'm having anxiety and then accepted the situation , wouldn't the anxiety be gone and so done symptoms ?

Detailed Answer:
It is then not possible for you to have HIV.

Accepting you have anxiety is just the first step in a long process of healing. You will need treatment with an SSRI antidepressant for long-term anxiety treatment, as benzodiazepines like Xanax cannot be used for more than a few months without serious side effects. You would also benefit from cognitive behavioral therapy. I do offer text-based CBT via my private link on this site if you cannot find a therapist in your area.

one twndency that i know i have is just picking one negative thing and just go after it until it gets resolved....it does not matter if that is thing, person, any relationship...etc....would that be under cognitive behavior? i have experienced that several time in my life...

Detailed Answer:
That would absolutely be something that could be helped greatly with cognitive behavioral therapy. Picking a negative thing and running with it even to your own detriment would be something that could be examined and improved. I'd be happy to work with you!
