Are Lightheadedness, Eye Sensitivity And Foggy Feeling In Head Symptoms Of Schizophrenia?

default
Posted on Fri, 31 Jul 2015
Question: I suffer from anxiety, however, my symptoms as of late are to the extreme and like nothing I've felt before. It all started in March when I was getting light-headed often and then I was having chest pains every day all day. I got blood work and a CT on the chest done, all seemed good. However, it didn't stop with my body just feeling very ill. Either I was having chest pains or very tense headaches. So much they kept me up late hours unable to sleep until the early morning. I've even gone to the ER, which as someone who has suffered from anxiety for over ten years has never done. I pulled a muscle in my neck and I was convinced I had a cervical dissection. After a CTA and CAT scan on the neck, I was told that I had a back muscle spasm and cervical strain. From then on, I was adamant that I can't let my head get the best of me, but I was having such intense headaches where it felt like my head was being squeezed and my ears felt like they were going to pop. And once again, I was having chest pains. I got that cleared with a EMG, told my heart was very, very healthy. As it should be, I'm 27. But these other symptoms have yet to subside: My hands and feet tingle, especially my fingers, as will my tongue from time to time and sometimes I'll feel a very strange sensation when talking. In addition, when I'm walking at times, my left leg will feel limp and my muscles feel very sore. It's like my joints are weak. In addition, I have a tooth infection which makes my upper right gum sore. Yesterday I went to the doctor and she doesn't seem concerned at all. But I just feel so... foggy, I guess you can say. My head just feels foggy, and yesterday I felt like I couldn't even see straight and I've felt lightheaded the last few days more than once. It's starting to really scare me. Light just feels sensitive to my eyes, my head feels foggy and like I can't even think or see straight. Even my feet feel heavy. I am diagnosed Generalized Anxiety, but it has never felt this bad where I feel like I'm actually going crazy, or like something is wrong with my head. Am I schizophrenic? That is my absolutely biggest fear. My physician said she could get my brain scanned, but she would only be doing it for my own reassurance and not because she is concerned something is wrong. I just feel at such a loss. I don't want to go back to the ER but at the same time I want this thing figured out so badly. It's keeping me from living.

Brief Answer:
You are not schizophrenic so no need to worry.

Detailed Answer:
Hello thanks for asking from HCM for your health related queries

I can understand your concern. I have read the history of problems you have mentioned and from the symptoms you have mentioned it appears that you have complaints related to anxiety spectrum disorder. In all history you haven't mentioned any symptom that can be used to make diagnosis of Schizophrenia. Schizophrenia is a psychotic illness in which various psychotic symptoms like auditory hallucinations (third person hallucinations), delusions, suspiciousness, abnormal behaviour, irrelevant talking etc are seen.

Your symptoms don't suggest Schizophrenia. So you are not suffering from Schizophrenia.

Your doctor are saying right, they are taking your scan just to reassure you and scans have no role in making diagnosis of anxiety disorders. There is nothing wrong in your head, please remain relaxed. You are absolutely fine.

Thanks, Hope this helps you. If you have more doubts please ask again.

Take care

Thank you for your answer. I'm still having some issues. I woke up today and felt like I couldn't even see straight. It was like tunnel vision. I just felt like my vision is really weird and like I can't concentrate and at the same time I'm aching in my legs and arms, as well as my fingers and toes tingle. While my doctor on wednesday told me she doesn't want to expose me to the radiation of a brain scan just to reassure me, I can't help but fear something is wrong. But then I think, I had blood work in March, wouldn't something show on there? I just don't know what to do. I have a splitting headache over this.

Brief Answer:
All these symptoms are due to anxiety only, no need to worry

Detailed Answer:
Hello again and thanks for asking again.

I can understand your concern but in the same time I agree with your doctor also. Multiple CT scans results in exposure to X rays and this may prove harmful in future. So CT scan should be done only under indication only. So try to reassure yourself without CT scan as this will be best for your health. Your Blood work was normal because if it was abnormal then they would have informed you. So no need to worry. All these symptoms you are having are due to severe anxiety only and this anxiety is related to ideas about bad health. This is nothing but health anxiety. Try to relax yourself. Don't feel bad about your health. You are absolutely normal and are not suffering from any serious illness. The tingling in fingers, aching in legs and arms, poor concentration, tunnel vision like symptoms etc occurred due to health anxiety attack only. So continue to take medicines for your health anxiety and your symptoms will reduce.

Thanks, Still have more doubts please ask again.

Thank you. Yes, I was discussing those symptoms with my mom and in addition, I get this weird feeling in my lips along with the weakness in my joints and I told her I feel like I'm afraid that I'm going to start slurring my words and wake up in the morning like I've lost function and/or like I'm not all there. But she explained to me that I've had all the tests that I could possibly get done, I'm healthy. That I need to focus on taking Zoloft that I have been subscribed and think less of bad health, that I'm 27 and am feeling like an old woman. Would you agree? It's just the fact that I feel like I'm going to slur on my words, weakness in my joints that really have me paranoid and anxious. Are there things I should be doing to help with my anxiety?

Brief Answer:
You are healthy and are not getting older

Detailed Answer:
Hello again and thanks for asking a follow up

Yes considering the history you have mentioned your symptoms are related to health anxiety only and there is no need to go for more and more investigations. The fear that you might develop slurring of speech or will loose some function is also due to this anxiety. You are perfectly healthy and no need to worry for that. She is right continue to take Zoloft or Sertraline and your anxiety and anticipation will reduce. Try to avoid minor symptoms and don't maximise them. Suppress any feeling that provoke the anxiety.

Don't feel that you are getting older. You are 27 only and have perfect health so how can you become older. You are not going to slur or will develop weakness in joints. No need to worry. Just relax yourself and remain calm. Reassure yourself again and again that you are healthy.

Thanks, hope this helps. Still have more doubts please don't hesitate to ask agin.
