Question: I have Osteoporosis. My Femor is -2.8 T Score. My Gynecologist prescribed a natural food diet and eliminate calcium supplements. How can I go about this and be sure I am getting enough Calcium and Vitamin D?

Brief Answer:
You can check your blood levels of vitamin D and calcium level.

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thank you for asking HCM

I have gone through your query. While taking the prescribed diet, after 1 month you can do tests for blood levels of vitamin D and Calcium. If it is low then you should add supplements. Also should do mild weight bearing exercises to strengthen bone gradually.

Avoid excess coffee and tea as it decreases calcium absorption.
Avoid alcohol , smoking , soft drinks and colas.
Avoid excess salt as it can cause calcium loss from bones.
Take fishes like sardines , tuna , mackeral , salmon , anchovies with bones.
Taking hard boiled egg is also good way to get calcium and vitamin D.
Meat and meat products take in moderation.
You can take chinese cabbage , broccoli , mustard greens or turnip greens.
Taking tomatoes , potatoes , sweet potatoes and bananas helps in getting magnesium which is also helpful for your condition.
By taking capsicum, oranges or pineapple or berries helps in getting vitamin c which is also good for you.

Let me know if anything not clear.
I am happy to help you.
Thanks.

I have been advised to start on Fosamax. I previously was taking Fosamax from 2006- 2009 and have not taken any medicine for Osteoporosis since then. I was told to go to the Dentist to have my teeth checked before I start on Fosomax for the second time. Thank you.

That's all for the moment. Thank you.

Brief Answer:
If calcium and Vitamin D doesn't work then you can go on with Fosamax.

Detailed Answer:
Welcome again.

Thank you for your follow up query.

If calcium and vitamin D is not helping to improve Osteoporosis then you can go again with Fosamax (alendronate). Fosamax is not given continuously for more than 5 years. As you have given a long gap after your first therapy 2009 you can go for it again after a consultation with your Orthopaedician.

As alendronate (Fosamax) causes osteonecrosis of jaw in those with dental problems a consultation with dentist and a opinion from dentist is well appreciated.

Hope this may help you. Let me know if anything not clear.
Thanks.
