Question: Hello Dr.
My baby is 12 months old. Before 4.days I gave her chickpea at night after that at night she puked a lot of breastmilk and her poop was light yellow watery with bad smell twice(crying a lot while doing)... Next day she was a bit normal in behaviour and didn't puked but she did massive poop..watery yellow transparent type and this was happening early in d morning around 5-6. Then we went to our pediatrician he suggested ORS and Dr. reddys XXXXXXX and if vomets emeset 2.5 ml twice. From yesterday we started all d medicine and she is doing poop more times now same light yellow watery and puked too last night. Plz suggest what to do... Should we give medicine for three days then again goto our pediatrician....?

Brief Answer:

Viral diarrhea - suggestions given

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

It seems your kid is having viral diarrhea. Once it starts it will take 5-7 days to completely get better.

Unless the kid's having low urine output or very dull or excessively sleepy or blood in motion or green bilious vomiting; you need not worry.

There is no need to use antibiotics unless there is blood in the motion. Antibiotics might worsen if unnecessarily used causing antibiotic-associated diarrhea.

I suggest you use zinc supplements (Z&D drops 1ml once daily for 14 days) & ORS (Each small packet mixed in 200ml of potable water and keep giving sip by sip) as hydration is a very important and crucial part of treatment.

If there is vomiting you can use Syrup Ondansetron (as prescribed by your pediatrician).

Regarding diet - You can use cerelac. Any flavor will do. Avoid fruit juices as they might aggravate diarrhea. You can give zinc supplements & ORS apart from normal vegetarian porridges & soups.

Hope I have answered your query.

Take care
