Are Cipro And Metronidazole Advisable While Suffering From Abdominal Pain?

default
Posted on Fri, 5 Feb 2016
Question: I was diagnosed with diverticulitis in October and was given a round of anti biotics which alleviated the symptoms. On December 26 I experienced acute pain and had a CT scan which confirmed diverticulitis and was given another round of 2 antibiotics. Again, by XXXXXXX 3rd I was pain free. Over the last few days I have been experiencing similar abdominal pain, but much less severe - but still it painful. I'm travelling so my Dr. provided with a script for 7 days of antibiotics...cipro and metronidazole. My question is should I take them or will this pain potentially clear up on it's own.

Brief Answer:
You have to take Cipro and metro.

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for your query and an elucidate history.
Read your history of recurrent Diverticulitis and taking antibiotics to get the pain-free intervals.
Since you have pain in abdomen and have a script for Ciprofloxacin and metronidazole, you should start taking this immediately and complete the course of 7 days. This pain may not go away on its own.

Take an opinion of a Surgical Gastroenterologist or a General Surgeon and get further clinical evaluation, investigations and further management.

I hope this answers your query, please feel free to ask for further relevant queries if you feel that there is a gap of communication.

Thanks for your response...I will be traveling until mid-March and won't be in a position to see my personal doctor until then. If the pain subsides through the use of this round of antibiotics and I stay pain free, can I assume that the infection has been resolved? My question is can I still be at risk for complications even though I'm feeling no pain or will the lack indicate that I can wait for a follow up with my doctor until I return home?

Brief Answer:
Risk of complication is there.

Detailed Answer:
Certainly yes, if you remain pain- free till you return back, you can be certain that the infection has been resolved and wait for follow- up.
The risk will always be there to have complications even though you are not feeling any pain.
I hope this answers your queries.
