Are Anoro, And Flovent More Effective Than Advair Diskus, And Spiriva For Treating COPD?

Question: I have copd which I have been treating with Advair discus and Spireva. prescribed by my regular MD along with an albuterol inhaler. I had to go last week to a urgent care doctor who prescribed another protocol of Anoro plus Proair Flovent along with the albuterol inhaler. He says this is much better than my current option. All the medicines are expensive but I can buy Advair and Spireva from Canada at a greatly reduced cost, not so with Anoro and Flovent. Price is an important consideration. Is the difference in effectiveness of the two options great enough to pay quadruple the cost? I am 79 years old and have had this problem for several years

Brief Answer:
If COPD poorly controlled then Anoro should be utilized.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and Welcome,

I appreciate your concern..

Advair Diskus contains a selective LABA (Long-acting beta-agonist) and fluticasone a corticosteroid.

Spiriva is tiotropium bromide a LAMA (Long-acting muscarinic antagonist).

Albuterol is a beta-agonist inhaler that relaxes the bronchial smooth muscle.

Anoro is mainly a maintenance medication. It has the advantage of the once-daily dosing regimen.

Flovent contains the same fluticasone which is present in Advair.

So in summary, ANORO is the only new drug that can be of benefit. The prescribed Flovent is already present in Advair.

If the COPD is poorly controlled with the above then switching to the regimen prescribed by your doctor would be the way to go.

If the COPD is well controlled and affordability is an issue then you may discuss continuing the same medication for the time being.

Wishing you the best of health.

Please consult your doctor before deciding on any further course of action.

Hope I have answered your query.
