Ammonia type smell in my nose and throat. Comes and goes - it's just come back after several months of not having it. Could it be related to hay fever or sinus related issue?

Thanks for your query.

Yes, chronic infection in the sinus can result in smell like you are sensing.

Also when there are abnormal bacteria in the throat or nasal mucosa a smell similar can be experienced.

Do gargle with antiseptic solution like CHLORHEXIDINE twice daily for three days. This will reduce the bacterial load and reduce the smell.

If there is no recovery with the above antiseptic solution then sinus and nasal cavity examination would be needed.Do consult an ENT (Ear nose throat ) specialist for the same.

Hope I answered your query.

Wish you good health.
