I have heard that long term Homeopathic medicine usage affects bones negatively.
Is it true?
We consulted a homeopathic doctor and he advised 1.5 month of "Enlarged Tonsil" (Bio-Combination 10) medication. After few days, we consulted another physician and he said there are no enlarged tonsils. I am confused, please help and guide.

Thank you for your query through Health care magic.

The medicine taken by you for tonsillitis is not going to produce any side effect. We used to prescribe such medicines for 3 months, 6 months, 12 months etc without any side effects.

Your confusion regarding taking a Homoeopathic medicine for a prolonged period is justified, because we have heard a lot about the side effects of drugs in the conventional medicine. Homoeopathy was invented by Dr XXXXXXX Hahnemann of Germany, a Post graduate physician of the then conventional medicine who wanted to remove the side effects of medicines. He invented the process of potentisation or dynamisation. It is a process of reducing the quantity of the original drug and improving the medicinal quality of it to make its side effects the minimum.

The medicine prescribed for the enlarged tonsils are diluted to the level of 6X or 12 X. This means the original drug is diluted in the rate of 1 in 10 parts of sugar of milk. If the company has used a medicine of 6X, it means that such a dilution has taken place 6 times. Therefore the original drug in the medicine is only 1/0000 (six zeros) or if used 12 X, then the contents of the original drug is only 1/ 0000(12 zeros). We call it a low potency medicine. That means the original drug is very very minimum.

Sugar of Milk is nothing but Lactose, the lactose part of pure cows milk freed from fat. Even this does not make any problem in persons with lactose intolerance, because the total content of the lactose in a tablet of 1 grain is almost 1 gram and usually patients are advised to take 3 or 4 grains at a time for three or four times a day. Even if taken by persons with diabetes, they are harmless because they are only almost equal to 3 or 4 grains of boiled rice.

The original drug used in the medicine taken by you are nothing but biochemical drugs, we call them tissue remedies. They are the essential biochemicals/ tissue salts of the body, like Ferrum Phos (Phosphate of Iron), XXXXXXX mur (Pottassium chloride), Calcarea Phos(Phosphate of Calcium) etc. We have similar 12 tissue remedies used in this category of biochemical drugs used in Homoeopathy for similar conditions. All of them are used as supplements going to help the replacement of tissue salts needed for the fighting of diseases. Here they are used to protect the inflamed tonsils. Potentisation helps for better absorption of the tissue salts, because they are diluted to the level of absorption by the body just as they are present in the food we take.

In the real sense the tissue salts or biochemical drugs are later added to the system of Homoeopathy, after Hahnemann, because all of them are used in a potentised manner. If these are in 1 in 10 dilutions,(decimal scale), the common dilutions used in Homoeopathy is in the rate of 1 in 100 (centesimal scale). The lower potency is 30 which means the original dilution has taken place in the rate of 1 in 100 parts of a non medicinal substance 30 times. That means that the original drug substance in the 30 potency medicine is only 1/ 1(add 60 zeros). We commonly use 200 potency as medium potency which means 1/1(add 400 zeros), 1000 (1M) potency which means 1/1(add 2000 zeros), 10M potency , 50M potency, CM potency etc. as high or highest potencies. This I have explained so elaborately to convince you that there is no harm if you have taken the medicine for 1.5 months or even for 12 months. We, the practitioners in India prescribe such medicines for such a long periods like 3 months or 6 months, even 12 months or more . Absolutely no harm but it will help the immunity only.

One of the essential factor why Homoeopathy is becoming more and more popular is because it is a safe medicine. No body has proved so far that Homoeopathic medicines will badly affect the bones. Since it is a new system of treatment, there is a lot of calumnious anti propaganda going against it by vested interests and you can take this also like that.

The main allegation against Homoeopathy is not that it is harmful, but it is useless because it has got no medicinal contents. They say so because of the dynamisation, that remain still an unexplained process by the scientific community. Both are baseless because Homoeopathy is becoming more and more popular in the world.

Therefore you can remain free from any sort of anxiety about the medicine if you have taken even without swollen tonsils because they are only going to help the patient in a positive manner.

As far as your next concern, it would be difficult to predict your diagnosis. Tonsilitis classically present with throat pain, painful swallowing and fever. Over a period of few days, the symptoms can also become better. Therefore at this point of time, it is difficult to predict what you have. However your treatment can be modified based on the current health state. You can discuss with specialist to confirm the condition.

You can ask for any further clarifications in this regard. I am ready to answer to the level of your satisfaction.

With best wishes,
Dr. C. J. Varghese
