30 Year Old, Smoker. Noticed Bluish Discolouration On Upper Lip And Sleepless Night. What Is Going On?

Question: Hi there,

I have a few issues going on with me and I'm not sure if they are related or not...

First off, I am a 30 year old woman and a smoker. I eat well and go to the gym regularly. Over all I'd say I'm generally healthy. Two days ago I got a bluish discoloration on my upper lip (right side) about the size of an index finger print. I noticed this in the evening, there was nothing there during the day. Yesterday morning when I woke up it was gone, but reappeared again later in the day, though barely. It was much more faded than the day before. As of today, it is completely gone. Yesterday I also started getting a dull bruised like feeling on the inside of my right cheek, in the back closer to the ear. it feels a little swollen and hard from the inside when I touch it. It's not much of a bother to me until I eat. That's when I really notice the pain. I'm not sure if this has anything to do with all this but last Wed. I noticed that I got a bruise, again on my right side, on the underside of my right arm just below the elbow. I don't remember banging into anything for this to occur but I have been know to be a little bit clumsy. Plus, my face feels like it's on fire and red, like I got a really bad sunburn but haven't been out in the sun long enough for that to happen. Last week I also suffered some gastrointestinal issues. I'm normally constipated and for most of last week I had diarrhea and bad stomach cramps. Then it would switch and I'd be constipated again for a while. I took some pepto-bismal on Monday and it didn't pass until Wed which is when I had the runs again. (sorry for too much info!)
I'm sure it's nothing, but the coincidences of the bruising/bruising feel all on my right side have me a little worried. Any info or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

P.S. I've also had trouble sleeping and staying asleep for about the last 2 months.

Hi there.
Mississaugua seems a fun place to be. Tons of my friends from the Gulf region migrated to this region years' ago & am guessing it's a large community. Dont worry about the details..it actually helps! Understand from your profile, you tend to get stressed pretty easy & the lack of sleep et al over the last 2 mths suggests some sort of personal turmoil or some minor irritants in z personal space..(thiswe all go through & need someone to speak to)! The gastrointestinal symptoms are suggestive of IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) & fit in with the current profile description et al. Perhaps a visit to a therapist, counsellor or confiding in a good friend or yours truly will help vent & that's all that is needed! Nowadays, i recommend patients going on a short vacation where they can get medically assessed for half the cost..a aconcept called medical tourism! One gets a holiday & gets an overall of the system with many docs et al under one roof. The hospital i work at in Bangalore conducts such trips & would be happy to pass the info onto you or perhaps you would prefer a location like Goa with its beaches (both in India)!
The bluish eruptions et al though need a little investigation. More likely than not, they should be 'transient' lymph node enlargements. If the 'bruises' reappear, please go across to the laboratory & do a complete blood count & include a bleeding time, clotting time & platelet count. This will allay any doubts about any underlying vascular problems. I dont envisage a problem. The other possibility is the development of an allergic phenomenon to the pepto-bismal that you consumed & am guessing this is not the first time you took this..it may be some sort of hypersensitvity reaction that is easily addressed by avoiding said substance. I doubt minor trauma caused any of these but if so, my advice regds doing those blood tests stands.
I do hope have managed to calm your nerves, resassure you there is no serious issue at hand & have pointed you in the right direction to make an informed deciscion for yourself. Do let me know if there is anything else can help you with or you wish further clarifications. If not, cheers & do close the query & send in your valuable feedback & ratings.
Cheers & Wish you Good health & do hope these niggles sort out & you are soon back to a good sleep-wake cycle!
