User :   My son has had what is classified as three "breathing incidents" since thanksgiving. He has had to go to the er twice. No one is calling it Asthma. The doctor keeps calling in perscriptions without seeing him. I'm not sure what to do. He swims competitively, but cannot even do light exercise now with wheezing and becoming short of breath.

Doctor :   hi
User :   hello
Doctor :   whats his age?
User :   my son had h1n1 in october and his breathing situation has gotten continuously worse. He is 17.
Doctor :
Doctor :   what is the treatment he has taken?
User :   He has ProAir Inhaler and they just called him in a prescription for Advair. I'm concerned about the Advair. He took it when he was 10 and blacked out while swimming.
User :   He has been on Predisone two different times now.
Doctor :
Doctor :
what did the doctor tell?
User :   Nothing really, his actual doctor has only seen him once. He calls things in based upon the ER visits.
User :   Dr. Statement - "guess he may need to start 6 months preventive treatment" Not sure what that treatment is
Doctor :   what was the diagnosis made by doctor?

User :   Is there anything we should be doing to measure his breathing, nebulizer treatments at home, etc. The doctor is stopping short of diagnoising him with Asthma, said we needed to wait to see how he was in 6 months.
Doctor :
according to the history
Doctor :   it might be asthma or allergic bronchitis\
User :   In the meantime, as I previously stated, he has made 3 trips to the ER and cannot participate in swimming. Everytime he tries, he has another incident.
Doctor :   as he was infected with h1n1 2 months back..let him not go to swimming competetions
User :   He becomes very short of breath, rapid breathing, nail beds turn greyish blue, unable to speak to you as well as his entrie body trembling. These are his symptoms. Each time, they get worse.
Doctor :   recently did he see any dooctor?
User :   ER physicians
Doctor :   ok
Doctor :   what are the investigations done?
Doctor :
did they order for any xray?
User :   Chest xrays - twice. Followed by breathing treatments. Chest x-rays are clear.
Doctor :
ohh ok
Doctor :
if xray is clear its good
Doctor :
it rules out any infection
Doctor :
so it must be either asthma or allergic bronchitis
User :   What should we do to help him?
Doctor :
as of now for both asthma and allergic bronchitis the treatment options are same
Doctor :   did they take any ECG of heart or echo?
User :   No. He seems to respond better to the ephinephrine than to abuetrol. Does that indicate one over the other.
Doctor :
no nothing like that.
Doctor :
epinephrine will reduce the bronchospasm
User :   Neither one gives him long term relief. At the most he gets about 3 - 4 days.
Doctor :
did they take any ECG of heart or echo?
User :   no
Doctor :
User :   After the last occurance he did not bounce back much at all. Got min. relief. Gets out of breath just walking up or down steps or walking from the house to the car.
Doctor :
as u were complaining of cyanosis i.e peripherals getting blue in colour
Doctor :   and breathness on exertion
Doctor :
its better u get ECG and ECHO of heart done
User :   ok we will talk to someone about getting that done
User :   Is this probably also Asthma triggered by the h1n1?
Doctor :   ok

Doctor :
once we rule out any cardiac cause
Doctor :
we can relax
User :   ok - thanks. I am very nervous for him. Would something cardiac cause whezzing as well as the other symptoms I told you about.
Doctor :
cardiac cause will cause breathlessness on exertion and
Doctor :   and turning of hands into blue
Doctor :
its just a suspicion
Doctor :
better to be on safer side
User :   How do I get these tests done when I can't even get his doctor to schedule an appointment to see him.
Doctor :
nothing to worry relax ,everything will be fine
Doctor :
why his doctor is not giving appointment?
User :   I don't know. When I call he just calls in prescriptions and doesn't make appointments even when I request that he be seen.
Doctor :
Doctor :
U should some how get his appointment
Doctor :
or lese change an other doctor
User :   I will try again tomorrow. I did call a pulmonologist today, without referal from his doctor, and have an appointment for a week from today. After making that call, he had another minor incident tonight. Not enough to go to hospital. Should we wait for a week or try to get in sooner to someone else.
User :   I'm a mom and scared for my son. I will keep doing what needs to be done.
Doctor :
it depends upon te condition of ur kid
Doctor :
sooner the better
User :   Ok - Thanks for your time.
Doctor :   u are welcome
Doctor :
is there anything i need to help u with?
User :   Nothing else - I will try to get the test done you recommended. Better to rule things out as you said - to be safe. I hadn't thought of those. Thanks again
Doctor :
Did you follow what I said? Please get back to me in case of doubts.

Doctor :   bye take care
