User:Hello Doctor
Doctor:How can I help you
User:This in regards with my Mother's health. She is 50yrs old now,the main problem she is facing is knee pain due to overweight. Also her legs and hands are swollen, could please suggest some suitable solution to this
User:Can I share my mother photograph so that we can see the legs & hands which are not usual. Can I?
Doctor:So the swelling in the legs and the knee pain may be related. If she is over weight the knee joint takes a beating every time she walks. A good first step to see what is going on is to get x-rays done
Doctor:sure. you can upload a photo and I will see it
User:I have just uploaded photo Doctor.
Doctor:I have seen the picture. But i just want to clarify one thing. Is the left hand more swollen than the right or are they equal
User:they are equal
Doctor:ok good
User:the swollen of legs and hands is it kind of disease?
Doctor:Well. The swelling is most likely simply fat. I see no signs of anything major like an infection or anything.
Doctor:And fat deposition in women of your mother age has a tendency to collect in those regions
User:Ok,but at leg regeins it is hard
User:What remedy you would like to suggest doctor?
Doctor:I understand. There is a chance that some edema has developed in those regions due to venous stasis... the blood in her legs will have difficulty moving up back up to the heart. so it sits there and the fluids leak out causing hard pitting edema
Doctor:in that case it would be a good idea to get an ultrasound of the legs as well to rule out any blood clots and then have her wear TED stockings (they are like crepe bandages that are woven into stockings that you can wear)
Doctor:The stockings will help with the circulation and reduce the hardness and swelling a bit
Doctor:But you should never wear such stockings until the ultrasound has been done
User:ok,and How we have to take care of this so that it shouldn't create serious issues in future as she grow older.
Doctor:Honestly the most important thing is to see how she can lose some of the weight. That will be the most effective therapy for her knees now and for her future health
User:Yeah,2months ago she has undergone alll medical chekups and all the test results are -ve,she has no sugar ,no High BP.
Doctor:that means she needs to get to a physical therapist and a dietician and start on a rigorous weight loss program to prevent those problems from developing!
User:Ok she started those with minimal.....So if I want to consult a doctor for her swollen legs and hands could you please suggest specialist/hospitals.
User:in Bangalore
Doctor:One moment
Doctor:let me check
Doctor:Do you have a specific area in Bangalore that you would like to look in?
User:no any area is ok,I stay in Vijayanagara
Doctor:Ok. Well it may be a bit of a distance to travel, but i believe that the Bariatrics Clinic at Fortis Hospital on Bannerghatta Road in South Bangalore is the best place to take her. This is my personal opinion as my cousin went to the same clinic and did very very well. Lost over 30 kilos.
User:What is Bariatrics Clinic means
Doctor:Bariatrics is a fancy term for weight loss clinic actually.
User:ok,Thanks for the help Doctor.
Doctor:For some patients they recommend medication, for others they recommend exercise and help you with those and for very few they recommend weight loss surgeries. The treatment is tailor made to the patient.
Doctor:Ok, make sure you take all her records with you to the clinic. Otherwise they will charge you again and do the same ones again.
Doctor:Is there anything else I can help you with?
User:Thanks for the suggestion,nothing thats it,Thanks a lot
Doctor:Thank you very much for coming to healthcaremagic
