Doctor:Following ovulation, there is something known as corpus luteum.
Doctor:This hormone is useful in the development and maintainance of pregnancy.
Doctor:In some cases, the corpus luteum is not sufficient to secrete this hormone
Doctor:which can lead to early abortion or termination of pregnancy.
Doctor:In such cases hCG is given to maintain corpus luteum, so more secretion of the necessary hormone (progesterone) and prevention of early abortion/termination of pregnancy.
Doctor:So if the patient has deficient corpus luteum, progesterone
Doctor:it is necessary that they take external hCG injections to prevent abortion and termination of pregnancy.
Doctor:It may not play a major role in women who already have normal corpus luteum and progestrone levels.
