User :   My daughter is 6 years old and she has been showing some blue veins throughout her body. It has been getting worse. Her fee looks like an old lady feet. It is also showing on her lower back some in her legs and shoulders. What can this be? Thank you!
Doctor :   Hi
Doctor :   Let me read your query
User :   okay
Doctor :   Ok
Doctor :   Since when has it been?
User :   I noticed it started maybe a couple of months ago.
Doctor :   Ok
Doctor :   does she have any other symptoms?
User :   Not that I noticed. She has energy and seems fine.
Doctor :   Ok
Doctor :   How about the weight change?
Doctor :   Has it varied in the past 2 months?
User :   She is pretty thin. 45 3/5 inches tall and 43-44 lbs. Not really much of change in weight in past few months. We work hard on getting her weight on that range. The only thing we have changed in her diet is that we no longer give her Pediasure as much as we used to. It was making her snore at night. So she went from 3 bottles to 3/4 of a bottle a day.
Doctor :   Ok
Doctor :   Most of the times it is a benign problem
Doctor :   and there is no disease causing it as such
User :   oh, her lymph nodes are a little swollen but I took her to a couple of docs who examined her and said it was normal size and more visible because she is thin. Also, her adenoids are a size 4 e one of her tonsils is a size 4.
Doctor :   Ok
Doctor :   This is the age, where immune system
Doctor :   is overactive
Doctor :   hence tonsils, lymphnodes and adenoids react
Doctor :   as they are part of the immune system
User :   so why these veins are getting worse?
Doctor :   Ok
Doctor :   It is a reaction from the veins
Doctor :   and they spread all over the body
User :   is she getting enough oxygen? Does lack of some vitamins could be it? how about anemia?
User :   what kind of reaction do you mean?
Doctor :   reaction from the vein
Doctor :   I would recommend you to see a Pediatric surgeon
Doctor :   once to get it confirmed
User :   reaction as it relates to the immune system?
Doctor :   The reaction is mainly from the veins
User :   Is a Pediatric surgeon different than her regular Pediatrician?
Doctor :   Yes, it is a different speciality
User :   I am sorry but I am not understanding. Do you mean that the veins are reacting without a cause?
Doctor :   Yes, it is a benign problem, causing no harm
Doctor :   the cause cannot be made out as such
Doctor :   So, first an examination would be essential to see the severity
User :   She does karate. Could the punching and kicking could be causing in by any chance?
Doctor :   The distribution of the lesions is not just related to punching and kicking
Doctor :   the description is also different
Doctor :   in the case of trauma, there shall be pain
Doctor :   and also discoloration
Doctor :   which differs in the areas
Doctor :   but what you are describing is like spider veins
User :   yes, some like the ones I have. Not redish but blueish. Some thicker and some thinner in the feet.
Doctor :   Ok
Doctor :   how about the pain?
User :   She doesn't really complain that much. Sometimes she says her legs hurt but she exercises so it is hard to tell. She is not a complainer. Hard to know when she is sick.
Doctor :   Ok
Doctor :   Have you checked for tenderness?
User :   no
User :   where do you recommend to check?
Doctor :   on the areas where you see that discoloration
User :   I haven't but I will do that. She is in school now. She does have an appointment this morning but there is no doctor available so she will see a nurse. Is there anything you think I should ask her to examine? I will also look for a pediatric surgeon.
Doctor :   Fine
Doctor :   that would be the right approach
Doctor :   also it is not an emergency as well
Doctor :   Hence not a problem at all
User :   I am almost done, sorry. Just one more question. Not anemia? Should a blood work be done?
Doctor :   Not necessary now
Doctor :   as there is no itching sensation as well
Doctor :   if that was the case
Doctor :   then we should have thought of an allergic problem
Doctor :   and checked for Eosinophil count
User :   no itching
Doctor :   Fine
Doctor :   that is why it is not required
User :   Ok. Thanks for your help. I appreciate it.
Doctor :   Thanks for consulting, bye for now
User :   bye
