Doctor :   Hi Dr here
Doctor :   How can i help u today?
User :   hello dr
Doctor :   hi
User :   i was wondering if you would find it concerning that my blood platelet count in an 18 month period went from 0000 to 0000 to 0000 to 0000 to 0000?
Doctor :   let me read your query
Doctor :   may i know ur age ?
User :   51
Doctor :   and the reason for doing the tests ?
User :   i am on both blood pressure and choleserol medications so i get blood tests done every few months
Doctor :   ok
Doctor :   as such the platelet levels are normal and there is no need for alarm
Doctor :   if the counts are less than 150,000 then u need to think about
User :   i was under the impression that platelets replenish themselves and would remain at the same levels unless there is a medical issue
Doctor :   yes
Doctor :   but the levels change within the day or anytime of the month
Doctor :   they do not remain the same value all the time
User :   so you don't believe that going from 0000 to 0000 is significant?
Doctor :   with age the ability of the Bone marrow to produce cells decreases
Doctor :   But as long as the levels are greater than the minimum required values there is nothing to worry
User :   is there anything you might suggest that could help increase or stabilize my platelet count.
Doctor :   good nutritious diet , like green leafy veg, and iron supplements will help
Doctor :   also take B12 & folic acid supplements as well
Doctor :   this will increase BLood cell production in the bone marrow
User :   do platelet counts sometimes vary from lab to lab?
Doctor :   yes , definitely
User :   should i take the b12 and folic acid in a multivitamin or as a supplement?
Doctor :   also, the time of blood drawn also makes a differance
Doctor :   you can take as a supplement
Doctor :   Iron suppements are needed in addition
User :   is there a certain daily% of b12 and folic acid I should look for in a supplement
Doctor :   folic acid = 5 mg PER day will help
Doctor :   B12 - THE body has adequate stores that last at least 1.5 yrs
Doctor :   so a standard dosage in a multivitamin pack, will be enough
User :   how about the amount of iron
Doctor :   minimum 60 mg of elemental iron is needed per day
User :   how much more in a supplement would you suggest?
Doctor :   any iron supplement available in the pharmacy would be enough,
Doctor :   as most of them do have the prescribed amount in them as given by the FDA
User :   thank you. you have helped calm my fears.
Doctor :   u are welcome
User :   anything else you might suggest?
Doctor :   keep urself healthy and fit, by excersise regularly
Doctor :   have good healthy habits, nutritious diet and be compliant with your medications
User :   thanks.
Doctor :   you are welcome
