User :   My daughter (8 yrs old) had lice Thurs, Aug. 26. We treated her with Nix, and she had no more itching. She started scratching her head again tonight a couple times. I know I am still jumpy about it, but I checked her. I did not find any live lice, but I think I found what may be previously hatched/empty nits. She said her head isn't itching now either. I don't want to overtreat, but don't want a reinfestation either! Originally, though, I did not see any live lice until the treatment and got about 15 during the combing after while her hair was still wet. What should I do?
Doctor :   Hi
Doctor :   Dr XXX here
Doctor :   Let me read your query
Doctor :   Ok
Doctor :   Nix is a good remedy for lice
Doctor :   generally follwing the treatment they do complain of some irritation
Doctor :   Nothing to worry
Doctor :   How many days did she receive the treatment
Doctor :   Does she have any kind of redness, Bumps over her scalp?
User :   Just the one treatment that night (2 wks ago tomorrow night). It says not to retreat unless you see more live lice.
User :   I saw a little bit of redness in one area where she had actually scratched at earlier, but thought maybe it could be because she scratched at it.
Doctor :   Ok
Doctor :   let me breif you
Doctor :   Head lice are insect parasites that are found on human heads and spread by spread by personal contact or the sharing of combs, brushes, caps, and other clothing. and a common problem with preschool and schoolchildren.
Doctor :   The affected individual, family members also infected, and the home all should be treated.
Remember: one head louse + one head louse = two head lice = the beginning of a head-lice infection.
Doctor :   To avoid re infestation
User :   Yes, we have educated her about the non-sharing. We think she got them the last day we were at the beach and tried on hats at a shop. Neither my husband or myself were treated, but we have also not had any itching/symptoms - and his head is shaved anyway.
Doctor :   You can give her asecond try too. ispite she continues to infest then plz do visit an PCP
Doctor :   But anyways get an course for yourself too
User :   so I can treat her again now without after-effects even if there are none?
Doctor :   Yes
Doctor :   Thats wil reduce the chance of recurrance
Doctor :   The treatment schedule is two doses generally
User :   ok
Doctor :   The other OTC drugs are
Doctor :   Pyrethrins (often combined with Piperonyl butoxide, in brand name products: A-200, Pronto, R&C, RID, Triple X)
User :   Is Nix better, or less, than these? Do you think this last treatment of Nix will do the trick, or should I do something else again in a few days?
Doctor :   Malathion (Ovide) is a prescription drug that has recently been recommended as a first-line agent for the treatment of head lice. It is combination drug and is mixed with isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) and terpineol. this should also help you
Doctor :   You can try Nix for time being hopr things get well
Doctor :   If there is an recurrance then visit your PCP and get prescribed for MALATHION
User :   I have read that you can find the nits further down the hair shaft without having lice after treatment. What i saw were probably about an inch away from the scalp on the shaft, do you think they are just old ones?
Doctor :   No they are the shells of new ones
Doctor :   You should rather comb her in wet hair gently immidetly following shampoo
Doctor :   Harsh combing will; also produce redness and itching
Doctor :   Here i will breif you about application
Doctor :   1.Remove all clothing.
Doctor :   2.Apply lice medicine, also called pediculicide, according to the label instructions. If your child has extra long hair, you may need to use a second bottle. WARNING: Do not use a cream rinse or combination shampoo/conditioner before using lice medicine. Do not re-wash hair for one to two days after treatment.
Doctor :   If some live lice are still found eight to 12 hours after treatment, but are moving more slowly than before, do not retreat. Comb dead and remaining live lice out of the hair. The medicine sometimes takes longer to kill the lice.
Doctor :   Re-treat in seven to 10 days
Doctor :   This will do
Doctor :   Did you follow me?
Doctor :   and lastly Soak combs and brushes for one hour in rubbing alcohol, Lysol, or wash with soap and hot water
Doctor :   Vacuum the floor and furniture. Do not use fumigant sprays.
Doctor :   Thanks for consulting me
Doctor :   Bye for now
Doctor :   Hi
