User :   I have dermagraphia. It's recently gotten massively worse - scratching can bring up a hive several inches in diameter, and it now takes several hours to go away instead of 30 minutes or so. I've had an extremely stressful time lately - could that be a factor? Antihistamines don't seem to have much impact. Any suggestions?
Doctor :   Hi
User :   Hi
Doctor :   may I know y9ur age?
User :   By the way, I already eat mostly organic food and use minimal chemicals. I have eaten a bit more chocolate lately, but it hasn't had this effect in the past. I'm 49.
Doctor :   Since when have you noticed this aggravation in the condition?
User :   The last 2 weeks, since my daughter went back to Australia after her first visit in 9 years.
Doctor :   Do you have any other symptoms apart from itching?
User :   Just the redness and swelling.
Doctor :   Do you notice any discharge from the lesions?
User :   No
User :   It's not like eczema, which I used to have years ago
Doctor :   Do you have any other medical illness such as diabetes/hypertension?
User :   No
Doctor :   Ok
Doctor :   Let me brief you.
Doctor :   Dermagraphia which are allergic in nature are treated by the help of antihistaminics.
Doctor :   If you feel that the antihistaminics are not helping your symptoms, then the next treatment option are topical steroids.
User :   And if it isn't allergic in nature?
Doctor :   Dermagraphia is a urticarial lesions, and they are in simple terms allergic conditions.
User :   I know it's histamine related but not actually an allergy TO anything
Doctor :   Have you followed?
Doctor :   Its an urticarial reaction, I was explaining to you in simple terms.
User :   Does a course of oral steroids help?
Doctor :   I would suggest topical steroids instead of the oral steroids.
User :   Can these be used to prevent symptoms, or only in response?
Doctor :   the act both in terms of prevention and curative,
Doctor :   However you will still have to follow the other preventive measures that you were following untill now along with them.
Doctor :   Since the topical steroids are not OTC, you would have to consult your doctor to obtain this.
Doctor :   Have you followed what I have suggested?
User :   I can get reactions anywhere on my body, including my face - would I have to use it continuously all over? Nothing I've used previously as a preventative has worked anyway.
Doctor :   That depends on the intensity of the reactions.
Doctor :   Antihistaminics are the mainstay of treatment and if they are not effective, then the next plan are these.
User :   I have an appointment with a dermatologist in a couple of weeks. My earlier question regarding stress - can that be relevant?
Doctor :   Yes, stress is one of the major factors in most of the urticarial conditions and its the same with dermagraphia too.
User :   That's interesting. I have a lot more options to explore then. Thankyou.
Doctor :   Do you have any other query?
