Doctor :   By sputum I mean do you get any mucous like secretion when you cough?
Doctor :   Let me explain to you.
Doctor :   Your symptoms are consistent with the features of upper respiratory inflammation.
Doctor :   This may have occurred either due to
Doctor :   1. A viral infection
Doctor :   2. Allergy.
Doctor :   Both these conditions are self limiting condition - meaning they heal on itself over a period of time ( which can vary between few days to 2-3 weeks)
User :   Generally monthly once I get cold, but this time its upto 2 weeks with cough
Doctor :   The previous instance when you have cold is probably just
Doctor :   due to allergy, however this current episode is probably associated with a viral infection
User :   Can I use Bendrayl tonic for this
Doctor :   This explains why you been having this cough for this long.
Doctor :   Benadryl syrup contains antihistamines which are useful for allergic condition,
User :   Cough syrup
Doctor :   they can help in temporary relief in some individuals,
User :   can u suggest some remedy, so that tonight I will have sound sleep
Doctor :   You may try this but if your symptoms are not better with benadryl syrup, I shall suggest you few home remedies that should help you.
User :   Tell me that home remedy
Doctor :   1. You will need throat lozenges which can be taken early as you develop a bout of cough.
Doctor :   Some of the throat lozenges are/can be easily prepared at home. Few examples are
Doctor :   a. A glass of hot water mixed with honey.
Doctor :   b. Ginger preprations such as ginger tea.
User :   Morning I Had take ginger with salt
Doctor :   Alternatively you can use commercially available throat lozenges such as nivaran or vicks tablets.
Doctor :   These lozenges help during the bout of cough.
Doctor :   but when taken early.
User :   Vicks & Nivaran are for cold
Doctor :   Ginger contains antiviral property, which is useful in treating the condition gradually.
Doctor :   I am talking about Vicks menthol containing chocolates(not tablet vicks)
Doctor :   and nivaran tonic is a throat lozenges, not medication for cold.
Doctor :   Apart from these lozenges other remedy which are useful is minor alteration in the way you sleep.
User :   Ok tell me finally what should I have to take tonight to cur my problem
Doctor :   a dry cough is often severe when you sleep flat on the bed.
Doctor :   So preferably lie in an inclined position (either by raising the bed to an angle or using 2-3 pillow to support your head and shoulder)
Doctor :   3. Apart from these deep steam inhalation, changing pillow and bed sheet cover to make sure you do not inhale dust settled on those sheet will help in preventing the symptoms.
Doctor :   4. Finally there are special antitussive syrups containing pholcodine
Doctor :   They are cough suppressants acting which are prescribed by doctor for dry cough and in condition such as yours.
Doctor :   You can obtain this syrup from your local chemist after getting a prescription from a doctor.
Doctor :   1-2 tsp of this syrup at night to be used for a week.
User :   Can I take Benedryl syrup
Doctor :   These are the treatment options available for this condition.
Doctor :   Like I said earlier, benadryl contains antihistamines which are useful in preventing allergic symptoms.
Doctor :   They are useful in treating chest congestion by expectorating the sputum and chest collection.
Doctor :   You can try out this syrup if you cannot obtain the antitussive syrup that I suggested.
Doctor :   You should be able sleep well with the syrup (the antitussive preferrably; if not benadryl)
Doctor :   along with the other measures that I suggested.
Doctor :   Finally before I conclude, this is a condition which takes time to heal and recovery.
Doctor :   The measures suggested are for symptom control alone.
Doctor :   You should be fine in a few weeks time.
Doctor :   Have you followed what I have suggested?
Doctor :   Are you there?
Doctor :   Are you there?
Doctor :   Are you there?
Doctor :   I have to close the window as you are not responding. Please chat with our doctors 24/7 for medical queries.
