User :   hi Everytime I bite down on my left side then my left ear hurts. The harder I bite the more severe the ear pain is. I had a nurse look in my ear and there is no infection or ear canal problems. The pain is like deep in my ear and towards the bottom of the ear. Sometimes it almost feels like the pain is directly behind the ear towards the bottom. I do notice that there is a lymph node there that feels a bit enlarged. Sometimes when I use my jaw alot for eating steaks or chewing gum then I can feel some sore throat pain just on the left side. Can this be TMJ and its inflaming the lymph node? Can it be wisdom teeth? I have no tooth pain. Can it be a tumor? This has been going on for 2 months. Please Help Iam 26 year old male that does not smoke or drink.
Doctor :   Hi
Doctor :   let me read your query
Doctor :   yes your symptoms do appear as TMJ syndrome
Doctor :   the lymph node is enlarged and painful, this seems to be due to inflammation
User :   can tmj cause the lymp node to swell right behind the ear and cause a sore throat
Doctor :   no
Doctor :   not really
Doctor :   but it could be associated with a infection at the same time
User :   but i have had this for months
User :   during that time I was on antibiotics for sinus infections
Doctor :   you mean the jaw pain ?
User :   no the swolen lymph node
Doctor :   ok
Doctor :   in that case this is a chronic infection
Doctor :   and not relatd to the TMJ
User :   what do i do
Doctor :   have youy done any Xrays ?
Doctor :   or any CT scan of the TMJ joints ?
User :   I had a head and sinus ct scan about 3 months ago for headaches but did not find anything
Doctor :   ok
Doctor :   but did it find anything in the jaw joints ?
User :   no they never said anything
Doctor :   the description of the location of the pain in relation to the ear, is defintiely rings the bells for TMJ disorder
User :   do you think it is possible that a tumor grown there and this is why when i bite down my ear hurts and lymph nodes a swollen
Doctor :   what you can do is see a dentist, who can examine the tooth and the jaw joints , get some Xrays too and evaluate if there is any arthritis there
Doctor :   if a tumor grows there, you will have difficulty occluding the jaw and closing the mouth
Doctor :   this does not appear to be due to a tumor
Doctor :   you should cut down on chewing gum
User :   is there any self test you want me to do to rule anything out?
Doctor :   apply pressure on the joint while you chew,
Doctor :   if this hurts then the problem lies in the joint of the jaws
Doctor :   but the description of your symptoms given in the history matches with presentation of TMJ by 85%
User :   no pain at all
Doctor :   what about when you chew downwards , very hard ?
User :   nothing actually when i put pressure on the jaw and push the hole thing to the right then there is no pain any where not even in the ear
Doctor :   the other issue would be resorptive cyst within the jaw bone, that causes pain due to associated bone destruction
User :   is that serious
Doctor :   yes, in case there is excess bone destruction, then it might need surgical rmoval of the cyst
Doctor :   a Xray will be diagnostic
User :   x ray or ct scan
Doctor :   Xray
Doctor :   not a CT
Doctor :   You can do a X ray initially to find the cysts
Doctor :   i hope your doubts have been cleared
Doctor :   take care and bye for now
