User :   hello. I am a 47 year old woman who has been treated for high blood pressure since my 2nd pregnancy 7 years ago. I've been doing a very low carb diet for 10 days & this morning, when I woke up, I had a very bad cramp in my right leg. After it stopped, I got up and promptly fainted. I hit my forehead and have a large lump there. I've had a headache and felt dizzy all day.
I took my BP pretty quickly after I had fallen and it was normal: 120 / 80. But this afternoon, a pharmacist took it for me again because I was worried about the headache and it read a whopping 176 / 92! Am absolutely terrified. What's going on?
Doctor :   Hi
Doctor :   I am Dr. XXX
Doctor :   Let me read your query
User :   Hi Thanks for any help you can give me!
Doctor :   The events that you underwent were typical of high blood pressure
Doctor :   However when you measured it , it was corrected because of you falling down
Doctor :   It corrects so fast
User :   Oh dear! so my meds aren't working then.
Doctor :   When did you review them
User :   I took another reading at home, after putting the kids to bed, and it was down to 145 / 85.
Doctor :   with your Doctor
User :   Not for over a year!
Doctor :   See within a day, the BP varied so large
User :   I've been under a great deal of stress recently.
Doctor :   Yes that could be a precipitating factor
User :   but why the enormous variation?
Doctor :   It is not under control at all
Doctor :   The BP varies at different situations
Doctor :   and at different postures
Doctor :   So the next important task for you is reviewing your medications
User :   Clearly not! am I in any immediate danger?
Doctor :   with the Doctor
Doctor :   2) Consider low salt diet, potassium salt
Doctor :   3) Start on some physical exercise for 30 minutes a day regularly
Doctor :   4) Stress relaxing techniques
Doctor :   5) If you are overweight, you have to put great deal of effort in reducing atleast 10% of your weight to control the BP
Doctor :   6) Ofcourse you need a battery of investigations now
User :   My BMI is under 28... but only just!
User :   how many investigations are we talking about??
Doctor :   Thyroid, Lipid , liver and kidney profiles
User :   Oh no. It's that bad, then. Couldn't the high level be a one-off? Because of the diet?
Doctor :   yes
Doctor :   High fat, low fibre diet
Doctor :   High salt diet
Doctor :   can cause them
User :   Good! I drink too much (2 glasses of wine per day) I know and I haven't been exercising. I've been eating high-fat protein as well so, yes, I've been careless.
Doctor :   More imp to tackle stress
