Swollen lymph nodes in the neck and behind the ears - Online Doctor Chats

User :   Hi I have swollen lymph nodes in my neck and behind my ears, very tender to touch, so much so that i can hardly bear to put my head down. plus tenderness all over my scalp, incl forehead but not the rest of my face aprt from in front of my ears. I am having sweats and ocassional shivering . An out of hours dr prescribed amoxycillin at 11am this morn (Uk time), but I don't feel any better ans am worried

User :   It started on Thurs evening ad the pain went up fron my left node to the top of my scalp, by this morning the right nodes were aslo swollen and the pain right across my scalp

User :   No
Doctor :   Do you have pain in the ear ?
User :   No, just my neck and scalp and forehead
Doctor :   ok, i would not consider amoxycillin to be strong enough to stop the infection i lymphadentis
Doctor :   you may have to do for better broad spectrum antibiotic
User :   OK shall I go back and ask for soemthing stronger? Is it OK to wait until Monday?
Doctor :   also i would advice you to get a FNAC of the swollen needle to get a clear insight about the lymphadenitis
Doctor :   yes, you can wait till monday
User :   What is an FNAC?
Doctor :   but take some pain killer like IBUPROFEN to alleviate the pain
Doctor :   FNAC ( Fine needle aspiration Cytology )
User :   Thanks, I am taking ibuprofen and paracetamol
Doctor :   here a small amount on material is taken form the lymph node and studies after staining to know what exactly the pathology is
Doctor :   its done using a fine needle
User :   Thank you, I am re-assured now, that it is not something i have to be immediately worried about
