User :   I've had a tongue piercing for 9 months with no issues. I caught it a few days ago and it has now swollen around the piercing, and there is what looks like a yellow lump forming today which is slightly painful. I'm rinsing with sea salt solution and antiseptic mouthwash regularly. I have antibiotics called norfloxacin which were prescribed for a UTI which I never ended up taking. Would it be safe to take these anitbiotics to clear up my infection? Is it ok to leave the stud in whilst it heals?
Doctor :   HI
User :   Hi
Doctor :   I'm Dr.XXX
Doctor :   Let me read your query
User :   Hi there
Doctor :   Do you have fever?
User :   I don't think so. I felt fine until I started reading about the worst case scenario's online and then I felt bad!
Doctor :   OK
User :   so not sure if it's psychological
Doctor :   Since when are you having this swelling?
User :   i caught it the stud on friday. it felt a little sore since, but it was yesterday i noticed the swelling. it wasn't going yellow yesterday, i could just see a lump.
User :   this morning when i looked i saw it was looking yellow. i'm worried it may be an abcess
Doctor :   Ok
Doctor :   Is it soft or hard lump?
User :   it feels hard
Doctor :   Ok
Doctor :   From your history it is probably a infection
User :   hard compared to the rest of my tongue anyway
Doctor :   Ok
User :   ok so would the antibiotics i have here be ok to take? they are norfloxacin.
User :   they were given to me for a water infection but i never took them
Doctor :   You can take it for 5 days
User :   these ones will be ok for the symptons?
User :   will it be safe?
Doctor :   Yes
Doctor :   If the pain or the swelling increases then you need to consult the doctor
User :   ok. can i leave the stud in?
User :   and see if it heals?
Doctor :   When Did you place stud in?
User :   it's been pierced for 9 months and i've never had problems. i swapped it over yesterday to a longer bar to accomodate the swelling
User :   so it wasn't tight
Doctor :   Probably thats the reason
User :   sorry, probably the reason for what?
Doctor :   Remove the stud under aseptic conditions
Doctor :   Reason for the infection
User :   but it was sore and swelling prior to me changing it. i only changed it because it was swollen
Doctor :   Ok
User :   so if i keep it in will it be a problem?
User :   or should i take it out and clean it and then put it back in? or is it best to take it out and leave it out?
Doctor :   Take it off
User :   i'd rather keep it in as it will heal up if i take it out and
User :   oh, ok
User :   right then, i'll start the antibiotics tonight and take it out.
User :   thanks for your help
Doctor :   Or you can consult doctor and then go
Doctor :   forward
User :   ok, thanks.
