User :   Hi my husband had a chalazion removed by surgery today but wasn't given any aftercare advice other than to take the pad off the eye at bedtime. He's just done that and there's fluid leaking down from the eye. is this normal and is there any aftercare advice you can offer?
Doctor :   HI,
Doctor :   May i know what kind of fluid is leaking ?
Doctor :   is it pus ?
User :   Not too sure. It was blood tinged to start with but is getting clearer a bit thicker than tears
User :   Not pus, no.
Doctor :   ok, since the sinus is fresh and can be a portal for infection again , its advisable to apply antibiotic ointments as a cover from infections
User :   He has chloraphenicol ointment but can't open his eye yet. Should he be trying to open his eye now? Sorry to be asking - it's just he wasn't given any advice and so we don't know if there's a problem or this is usual
Doctor :   you can use the same
Doctor :   let him not open his eyes by own , let them be separated by clean hands and apply the ointment
User :   Do you mean I should try and get his eye open for him?
Doctor :   yes,
User :   Okay. Is there anything he should do or not do over the next week, such as get water in it, shampoo etc?
Doctor :   no ,not al all
Doctor :   let him not use any irritants or water
User :   Okay, thank you. If it does get infected, how will I be able to tell, as it's very swollen and red now?
Doctor :   but wipe the area by antiseptic solutions like Cetrimide
Doctor :   the swelling he has now is due to surgery
Doctor :   it will reduce by 2 to 3 days
Doctor :   any swelling after that along with pain should alarm you
User :   Thank you. Can i purchase cetrimide at the chemist's over the counter or do I need to get him a prescription?
Doctor :   it is an OTC , you do not need a prescription
User :   Thank you very much for your help. I've been so worried and you've really helped. Thank you
Doctor :   you are welcome
Doctor :   Thanks for consulting me
Doctor :   kindly provide your feedback
Doctor :   Bye for now
Doctor :   Take care
