User:Hi My Son is having frequent stool watery stools since morning. He had about 10-12 motions. He is 8 yrs and 6 months. How much should be the quantity of the OFM suspension for his age
User:Hi Anyone there?
Doctor:I am reading your query
Doctor:One moment
User:Hello Doctor Are u there?
Doctor:How much does your son weigh?
User:22 Kgs
Doctor:I am here. one moment.
User:We have given him Econom XXXXXXX also
User:once in the morning
User:and Cyclopam 5ml for the stomach ache
User:2 times
Doctor:good idea. I would give him 2o0mg of suspension 3 times a day for 5 days
Doctor:and an econorm XXXXXXX after each dose
Doctor:Can you tell me what the concentration of the syrup is?
User:Do you mean to say OFM 200mg
User:my son is in hyd and i am in blr
Doctor:yes 200, sorry
User:so need to check
User:But how much
User:per dose
Doctor:Ok. Well the dosage guideline is 30mg per kg per day
Doctor:so since he weights approx 20kgs dry weight.
Doctor:The total would be 500mg a day
Doctor:600 mg is a bit above.. but it will do no harm
User:i cannot convert this into ml dose
User:as i have to give him into ml dose
Doctor:You need to know how many Mg's of drug are in each ml of the suspension
Doctor:Thats why i asked
User:will get back to you
User:in a minute
User:May i know your name please
Doctor:Sure, just log back on and chat again.
Doctor: XXXXXXX Bhardwaj
User:ofloxicin 50 mg, metronidazole 100mg
User:this is the composition
Doctor:ok, then you need to give 2ml per dose.
Doctor:and give the econorm after every dose.
Doctor:Do that for 5 days
User:this is the composition of each 5ml dose
User:2 ml will be very less
Doctor:if each ml is 100mg of metro.. then you need only 600mg a day
User:Hello Doc are u there?
Doctor:thats 2 drops 3 times a day
Doctor:i am here
User:See Doc each 5ml contains 100Mg
User:not each ml
User:its not drop
Doctor:ok. that makes more sense then
Doctor:ok. Then he needs 10ml per dose
Doctor:a total of 30ml per day
User:so i will repeat 10ml of OFM syrup twice daily for 5 days right
Doctor:i would give 3 times a day
Doctor:for 5 days is correct though
Doctor:and an econorm XXXXXXX after each dose
Doctor:thats very important to prevent these infections in the future
User:Econorm is for what Doc
User:means does it stop motions
User:can we give him Entrogermina alsowitht hat
Doctor:both of these are the same
Doctor:just diff brands
Doctor:They contain the spores of natural intestinal bacteria
Doctor:These bacteria MUST and SHOULD be present for healthy digestion and to prevent bad bacteria from growing
Doctor:When you have an infection like this.. the good / natural bacteria are dead or the antibiotics we take (OFM) will kill them along with the infection
Doctor:so its a good idea to reintroduce the healthy bacteria during treatment
User:But normally people say antibooitic does not help in stomach infection since its a virus infection
User:not bacterial
User:how do we differentiate between the 2
User:viral or bacterial
Doctor:I am very glad you asked. am hesitant to mention this with most parents
Doctor:see most infections are viral
Doctor:and the body kills it off within 3-5 days
Doctor:the antibiotcs are in fact useless
Doctor:but it's tough to tell a parent who is worried that.. oh do nothing for 5 days and then see
Doctor:so we recommend the antibiotic anyways
Doctor:if you feel like you want to wait a few days and JUST give the econorm 3 times a day.. I would be very happy for you
User:but since son is not that strong in the weight and all he looses the weight very fast due to loose motions so thats why we get worried
User:anyways i can wait
Doctor:Make him drink ORS solution through the day, that will prevent the weight loss and weakness
User:he vomits with ORS
Doctor:Does he like gatorade?
User:what is that?
Doctor:or Rasna powder?
Doctor:they are drinks that you get in the store.. They have a bit more sugar in them but they are tastier and have the same components as ORS
User:but do you think colored and flavoured drinks are ok to give?
Doctor:They are good substitutes for ORS if the child doesn't like it.
User:what about aerated once
Doctor:Well. I don't like the fact that they add artificial coloring in those drinks
User:hmm right
Doctor:but for the purposes of keeping him well hydrated and keeping his electrolyte levels normal during this infection.. they are very safe
Doctor:I just don;t recommend them as normal parts of the diet
User:Doc just for curiosity sake i am asking you this Are u a physician or Pediat
Doctor:I am actually trained as a Neurosurgeon
Doctor:I have a fellowship in Neurocritical care as well.
User:Actually i am the HR head for Happiest Minds and i am using this service first time. In fact i brought this but never used it myself
Doctor:thats the link to my profile if you would like to check it out.
User:but this looks good
Doctor:Am happy if i helped.
User:you guys are very responsive
Doctor:hey thanks. will tell the rest of the team.
