User :   Hi. I got a cold about a week ago (actually a little more, more like last Monday) and I still have a lingering cough. I've used mucinex which has helped at night. I've also taken cough drops, but I still have this cough. Anything you can suggest?
Doctor :   Hi
Doctor :   May i know if you have symptoms have subsided ?
User :   I still have a stuffy nose but I'm sneezing as much. Coughing is the one that hasn't changed much.
Doctor :   or you had additional symptoms like fever , weight loss, reduced appetite, etc ?
User :   *not sneezing as much.
User :   no fever, weight loss, or reduced appetite. those have been fine.
Doctor :   ok
Doctor :   in that case, you might be having a post infectious cough ,
Doctor :   this is due to persistant inflamamtion in the respiratory tract , after the infection has subsided
User :   Is there anything you can suggest taking to reduce the cough?
Doctor :   Try taking Tussin DM , for the cough
Doctor :   salt water gargling 3-4 times in a day will provide soothing relief
User :   My throat doesn't hurt that much, it's just that I always have the urge to cough. Like when I'm breathing in and out and I feel like I have to cough.
Doctor :   yes , any flow of air acts as an irritant and this causes cough
Doctor :   Sucking on any type of sugar-free lozenge or candy can also help with a dry cough
User :   so is tussin dm the only thing or is there anything else?
Doctor :   any prepration containing dextromethorphan can also be used
User :   okay. for tussin dm what is the correct dosage. I'm a 20 year old male (125 lbs.)
Doctor :   most doses contain 50 mg , for adults
User :   and is this a liquid or a tablet?
Doctor :   taking this 3 times a day will help
Doctor :   this is a tablet
User :   Can you give me a link to what product to take? I was looking on amazon and I didn't find a tablet version?
User :   Maybe I'm looking at the wrong site.
Doctor :   this also comes in form of gel capsules ,
Doctor :   eg robitussin , nyquil,
Doctor :   these are available OTC in any local pharmacies
User :   Okay. Thanks very much. I'll try that and hopefully this will work.
User :   Have a great afternoon!
Doctor :   you are most welcome
Doctor :   take care
Doctor :   have a speedy recovery
User :   thank you.
Doctor :   bye for now
