User :   My father who is 85 years old is otherwise healthy except that he is hypertensive. It is being manged with medication. His only problem is that he can not bear cold. Even in summer he keeps all the windows shut and uses a blanket. In winter the room heater has to be kept on always. I have seen people far frailer than him having no such problem and wearing regular light clothing even in winter. We live in He is not on beta bloker and he has no thyroid problem
Doctor :   hI, Dr here
Doctor :   Let me read your query
Doctor :   ok
User :   thanks doctor. His problem perplexes me
Doctor :   the current problem, of your father is more common in senile people
User :   what is senility
Doctor :   this is to do with the thermoregulatory center, in the brain , which monitors the temperture in elderly people
Doctor :   senility , people over the age of 75 yrs
User :   his body feels cold than usual to touch. But he has no other problem
Doctor :   this could also be seen in patients with renal problems
Doctor :   does he have a renal cause for his Hypertension?
User :   He had a urinary problem and underwent TURP a year and half back. Since then there has been no problem. His kidney function (creatinine and uria level are normal). Considering that it is a thermoregularoty problem, what should I do
Doctor :   Aging increases the threshold of detecting the temperature sensation, so the amount of sensory input needed to be aware of the sensation becomes greater. Changes in the brain related to the temperature sensation account for most of the other sensation changes.
Doctor :   Since the duration of chat time is less, I would email a few details to you, later on, to help you on this situation
Doctor :   with aging, you may have reduced or changed sensations of pain, vibration, cold, heat, pressure, and touch.
User :   is there anything I can do considering that he has no other problems. The basic idea is to reduce his discomfort and improve the quality of life (thhis is apart from from wearing warm clothing). any medications that you suggest. Thanks and your answers are reassuring
Doctor :   May i know the age and weight of your father ?
User :   85 and 62 kgs
Doctor :   height ?
User :   5' 66"
User :   sorry 5'6"
Doctor :   His ideal weight is about 65 kg
Doctor :   So i would advise, if he can gain a bit of weight
User :   there is no significant loss of weight. Infact no loss of weight
Doctor :   it would help him as FAT is a good insulator of heat
User :   I will follow your advise
Doctor :   he should gain some weight, by working out
Doctor :   and increasing his physical activity as far as posssible
User :   He does some elimentary exercise in the morning. But otherwise every active
Doctor :   physical inactivity, reduces the blood flow tto the body and he feels cold
Doctor :   good protien diet
Doctor :   excercise will help him
