User :   I have been asked to donate sperm for IVF. In the last 3 months , i have ingested recreational substances( metamphetamine) only on 2 occasions. The spermanalysis shows good sperm count and motility however. My question is whether there is risk of genetic abnormality to the embryo produced from this donation even though the result for the spermanalysis looks good?
Doctor :   Hi
User :   hello
Doctor :   may I know your age ?
User :   45
Doctor :   ok
User :   why?
Doctor :   some details are necessary for me to help you with my suggestions
Doctor :   hence I am asking these questions to you , as a doctor.
User :   Sure! The IVF procedure in=volves ICSI- the embrypolgist will select the sperm that 'looks' the best
Doctor :   I would want to tell you these things
User :   if a sperm is swimming along fine and 'looks' fine, does this mean it is not genetically affected, if you know what i mean? :-)
Doctor :   having been on metamphetamine , we can say that , you can go ahead donating the sperms
User :   can you please elaborate?
Doctor :   as with the analysis of the sperms, if the sperms are healthy, they will be taken up for further steps
Doctor :   it will not be affecting the counts or quality of the sperms
User :   metamphtamine doesn't?
User :   what then causes genetic defects?
Doctor :   there is no documentation yet that metamphetamine has caused genetic abnormalities when the father has been on it .
User :   can i ask your specialty?
Doctor :   if during sperm analysis , a healthy sperm is noted , they will go ahead with it
Doctor :   I am a General Physician, I can help you with the best of my knowledge on this
User :   and a healthy looking sperm means its prob nit has its genes/chromosomes affected you mean?
User :   thats very reassuring!
Doctor :   it is only on chromosomal studies by which one gets to know about the genetic background
User :   i see,
Doctor :   since the embryologist will study your sperms in detail
User :   so what causes genetic defects?
Doctor :   they will also be able to rule out any genetic defects
Doctor :   when they analyse the sperms
Doctor :   by healthy sperms i meant , the motility, the life span and the nourishment the sperm has in it , which can give maximum chances of a positive conception
Doctor :   genetic defects are due to the person's chromosomes
Doctor :   the genes that he carries in him , from birth , inherited from his family, etc
User :   so 'drugs' when they say affects male fertility, means it affects overall sperm count and motility?
Doctor :   yes , exactly,by fertility , they mean the counts , motility, survival time , etc
User :   great :-)
Doctor :   and the viability of the sperms, only this is done in semen analysis
Doctor :   to know the genetic problems , if any , they will ask you to do other tests like chromosomal study , karyotyping ,gene analysis studies etc
Doctor :   so amphetamine will not alter your genes
Doctor :   or transmit the same to the child
User :   i see! only possibly sperm count and motility?
Doctor :   yes , counts , morphology , whether sperms are dead /alive, nourishment , their survival chances , etc will be studied
User :   Terrific, you have been a great help, thank you?!! :-)
Doctor :   pleasure here
Doctor :   are there any more questions i could help you with ?
User :   no, I'll go ahead with using the donation. Wish me luck- it's all up to mother Nature then :-) many thanks!
Doctor :   Wish you good luck , I will surely hope for the best results and a successful pregnancy .
User :   :-)
Doctor :   I hope i answered all your questions.
Doctor :   thank you for consulting me.
User :   and then some, cheers!
Doctor :   you can chat with us again anytime 24/7
Doctor :   good luck
