User :   Can smoking meth cuase swollen lymph nodes?
Doctor :   Hi
User :   Hello
User :   I am very concerned right now
Doctor :   May I know your age?
User :   20
Doctor :   Since how long have you been smoking?
User :   i just smoked on saturday i dnt do it often, and then i woke up sunday and my tonsils were swollen i went to the doctors today ,and she said it was just a virus but wanted to run a hiv test on me, the last time i had sex was in novemeber.
Doctor :   Ok
Doctor :   Smoking doesn't directly influence or cause lymphnode swelling,
Doctor :   If there is an associated tumour induced by smoking, then it is possible to see swollen lymphnode.
Doctor :   This however doesn't happen suddenly.
Doctor :   So based on your description, I do not feel that smoking has caused the swollen lymphnode.
Doctor :   It is probably the infection - upper respiratory infection/tonsillitis which is the cause.
Doctor :   Have you followed what I have suggested?
User :   yes but
User :   my breath kind of smells, and their seeming to go down
Doctor :   Do you mean that the lymphnode swelling is coming down?
User :   yes
Doctor :   Bad mouth odour is again one of the symptoms of upper respiratory tract infection.
Doctor :   Let me be clear,
Doctor :   The swollen lymphnode is probably due to infection ( I didn't mean an HIV infection alone).
Doctor :   Any viral or bacterial infection could be the cause.
User :   but im not sick with a cold and im not running a fever.
User :   and i have been a little but tired
Doctor :   Fever and cold are one of the features of upper respiratory infection,
Doctor :   other symptoms such as bad odour, pain or discomfort while swallowing, throat irritation are also features of URTI.
User :   so what should i do? just get plenty of rest?
Doctor :   Tonsillitis is diagnosed, if tonsillar swelling is seen on physical examination.
Doctor :   Yes, you need rest,
Doctor :   use saline water gargles
User :   ok, and what are the symtoms of hiv?
Doctor :   Watch out for fever,
Doctor :   avoid cold and refrigerated food or drinks
Doctor :   if you develop fever, you will need antibiotics.
Doctor :   Symptoms of HIV depend on the stage of illness,
Doctor :   During the initial stages, most individuals do not have symptoms,
Doctor :   a few report of recurrent fever, upper respiratory tract infections, lymphnode swelling, appetite reduction, easy tiredness, generalised weakness.
Doctor :   These symptoms are common for all viral illness.
Doctor :   And so if you have most or all of the symptoms,
User :   well when i eat it seems like my tonsils get bigger
Doctor :   you need not worry.
User :   when i eat it seems like the
Doctor :   The possibilities of HIV with such symptoms are 2-3% when compared to other infections.
Doctor :   However, I agree with your previous doctor, that you need to check for HIV since you have an history of exposure.
Doctor :   Have you followed what I have suggested?
User :   and it eems when i eat they get bigger
Doctor :   It seems you have moved out of the chat window. Please log in back if you have medical queries
Doctor :   Hi
Doctor :   Are you there?
Doctor :   Hi
Doctor :   Are you there?
User :   hello
User :   it seems like when i eat they get bigger
Doctor :   Why do you feel that tonsils get bigger when you eat?
Doctor :   Because, tonsils are not visible easily.
User :   well something i sticking out if my neck
User :   and it feels like a tonsil or a lymph node
Doctor :   An inflammed tonsils aren't visible externally,
Doctor :   The discomfort / sticking sensation that you feel externally are due to the irritation on an already inflammed tonsils, caused by the food.
Doctor :   This will improve gradually with warm saline gargles.
User :   where do i buy saline at>
Doctor :   You can prepare a saline solution at home.
Doctor :   Add a teaspoon of common salt to a warm glass of water.
Doctor :   This can be used for gargling.
Doctor :   This should bring down the inflammation and the discomfort in a few days.
Doctor :   most often the symptoms should be down in 2-3 days,
User :   but why is it when i eat they get bigger like i can feel them on the outide of my moth
User :   i meant neck
Doctor :   but if the symptoms persist or you develop fever, then you need antibiotics.
Doctor :   A large tonsil can be palpated externally, and much easily by an act of swallowing.
User :   ok but i have been gargliung with salt water and they keep getn like this
Doctor :   These are few features that are suggestive of an inflammed tonsils.
Doctor :   They do not predict the severity of the condition, nor do they predict the probable causative organisms.
Doctor :   You need to continue on the gargles.
Doctor :   Symptoms will be down in a few days.
User :   ok
Doctor :   But if you feel your symptoms are getting severe - more pain develops, or if you develop fever
User :   how long does it take for a blood test for hiv take to get back with the results?
Doctor :   report back to your doctor, who will then prescribe you antibiotics.
Doctor :   You can get the result of HIV antibody test ( ELISA/Western blot) in a day
Doctor :   HIV DNA/RNA PCR test may take a weeks time before you can get the results.
Doctor :   Have you followed?
Doctor :   Do you have any other query?
User :   so about how many weeks?
Doctor :   Do you mean the time taken to get the results after giving the sample or when to get the test?
User :   time to get the results
Doctor :   This depends on the type of test you have been asked to take.
Doctor :   If the test is an antibody (ELISA/Western blot test),
Doctor :   you can expect the test in a day or two.
Doctor :   HIV DNA/RNA PCR test will take about 5-7 days.
User :   yes it was a blood hiv/ anitobdy
Doctor :   Most labs will give the results in a day or two.
Doctor :   Have you followed?
Doctor :   Do you have any other query?
User :   well yes
User :   i went tanning the other day and i have this rash above my buttoix like where the crack starts

User :   it looks kind of purple, but i itched it after i tanned
Doctor :   Since when have you noticed this?
Doctor :   Do you have history of diabetes?
User :   no i dont. . . but its itchy i just put some neosporin on it and it seemed to help
Doctor :   Ok
Doctor :   Let me explain to you.
Doctor :   The commonest cause for a lump in the gluteal cleft(crack) is a pilonidal cyst.
Doctor :   This happens due to the inflammation of hair follicles or skin inflammation at the region.
Doctor :   Symptoms usually subside with use of antibiotic creams.
Doctor :   You have done a good job by applying neosporin on it.
Doctor :   Apart from the neosporin cream/ointment,
User :   like i said i felt like it was sunburned and i itcthed it alot
Doctor :   you will need to avoid handling the affected area with bare hands.
Doctor :   Most often your symptoms should be down in a few days.
User :   ok it wouldnt have anything to with the ars rash would it?
Doctor :   However rarely they can increase in size, develop abscess,
Doctor :   you will need to see a doctor for further intervention.
User :   ok thank you
