User :   I am scheduled for mitral valve repair or replacement. I have one lung and lost the other to cancer 23 years ago. I am a non-smoker and remained fairly active until I was diagnosed with pulmonary hypertension / mitral regurgitation last year. Doctors suggested mitral valve surgery which is to occur soon. Can you tell me the outlook and risk involved for a patient with one lung? Thank you, in
Doctor :   Hi
Doctor :   I am Dr.
User :   PS: I am 56 yrs old.
Doctor :   As long as the other lung is functing , the prognosisi is good
Doctor :   There is certain criteria for surgery with one lung
Doctor :   People with adequate oxygenation from one lung they will do surgery
User :   the other lung is functioning. i am able to walk on trendmill for 2 miles at a fairly goog pace
Doctor :   More over, un reparied mitralvalve puts more pressure on lung/blood vessels
Doctor :   so ur vital capacity is reasonabvly good
Doctor :   so repaiting will prevent the progression of Pulomonary hypertension
User :   yes doctors told me surgery will help the hypertension. do you have opinion on pig valve vs mechanical valve
User :   they will try to repair. if not they will replace
Doctor :   wait a sec
Doctor :   mechanical , bioprothtics have less complication
User :   i do not want to take life time blood thinners if i can avoid them
Doctor :   i understand that
Doctor :   To prevent a risk of blood clots forming on the valve, blood thinners are used by patients for the balance of their lives. The anticoagulant, Coumadin, is the most common drug therapy used by mechanical valve replacement patients
User :   what is durability of pig valve (# of years before a second operation may be needed)?
Doctor :   Traditional tissue valves, made of pig heart valves, will last on average 15 years before they require replacement (but typically less in younger patients).
Doctor :   so it is discussion between u and ur surgeon
User :   Thank you. That is all the questions I have.
Doctor :   You have wonderful life
Doctor :   Thank you
Doctor :   Bye
