User :   I have tested positive for vaginal strep...what does this mean
Doctor :   Hi,
Doctor :   May i know the test you underwent ?
User :   I don't know...they took three internal (pap like) samples and one of a blister like sore on my anus. They told me it looked like herpes. Calidian (SP?) came back negative but strep came back positive
Doctor :   have you been put on antibiotics ?
User :   ye, initially they thought it was a UTI and gave meciprofloxacin and then when she did the internal exam she prescribed valacyclovir
Doctor :   valacyclovir is an antiviral , may be against herpes. I do not find a reason for you to be put on it
User :   why, she thought it looked like herpes
Doctor :   Strep ( Streptococcus ) is a bacterial strain known to cause suppurative infections , it can even cause UTI
User :   what is a supprative infection?
Doctor :   i understand she would have put you on antiviral as a cover , as she suspected herpes
Doctor :   suppurative means one infection where pus is produced ,
User :   is it possible to have both strep and herpes
Doctor :   infection can be localized to one or more structures in the genital tract
Doctor :   yes, very much possible
User :   possible or likely?
Doctor :   as the herpes is a virus it reduces the local immunity causing the area prone for bacterial infection
Doctor :   its possible
User :   so if you have the herpes virus you can then get strep
Doctor :   yes,
User :   when you test for clamidian and strep, do they not test for herpes?
Doctor :   no there are no specific lab tests , only clinical examination is the way
User :   clinical examination? Does that mean a personal examination? So they send a swab off to a lab to be tested for strep but how do they confirm herpes
Doctor :   Higher end tests like blood tests ( PCR ,VIral culture ) are present but very less used
Doctor :   the above are confirmatory tests
User :   I think I should request one, no?
Doctor :   yes, i really recommend , but get it soon as you have been placed on antiviral chances of getting it false negative are more
User :   I'm sorry...confirmatory tests for what, strep or herpes
Doctor :   confirmatory tests for herpes]
User :   Okay, now I'm confused...herpes is the virus reducing your immunity and then you get strep. Get a blood test for what?
Doctor :   a blood test for herpes
Doctor :   herpes is a virus
Doctor :   Valacyclovir is an antibiotic
Doctor :   strep is a bacteria not serious
Doctor :   strep can cause UTI
User :   An antibiotic works only on infection, correct, not on a virus.
Doctor :   you need to confirm the herpes by blood tests and an antibiotic to get rid of strep
Doctor :   yes, you are right
User :   the culture they took a few days ago...can they test that for herpes?
Doctor :   antiviral kill virus , antibacterial (antibiotic) kills bacteria
Doctor :   you have to ask them , for what culture have they taken it for
Doctor :   viral cultuyre needs the swab sample and needs lot many days for the result
Doctor :   culture*
