User :   I was taking 360mg of Tylenol 4 (codeine) up until I found out I was pregnant at a little over four weeks. I'm wondering if there will be any damage. When I found out I reduced the dosage to 120 mg for two days and then 30 mg for two days and then none to wean myself off. I almost cut my thumb off with a knife by accident and I didn't like taking percocet so had switched to codeine a few months ago.
Doctor :   Hi
User :   Hi
Doctor :   Since how long have you been on these medications?
User :   A little over a year
Doctor :   Let me brief you.
Doctor :   Tylenol is a safe drug during pregnancy.
Doctor :   However codeine is to be used only if necessary.
Doctor :   Higher doses of codeine can cause induce effects on pregnancy.
Doctor :   I would suggest you to slowly stop the medications.
Doctor :   An ultrasound scan which is done early in the pregnancy as a routine
User :   I did stop gradually at five weeks which was a week ago
Doctor :   will help in determining if there are any fetal effects due to the medications.
Doctor :   In that case, you can report to your gynaecologist, who will get an ultrasound scan done.
Doctor :   Further management protocol (that is continuation of pregnancy) will be based on the scan reports.
Doctor :   I would at this point like to state that, there have been no reports of pregnancy effects with the use of tylenol with codeine containing drugs yet.
Doctor :   Hence you need not worry much.
User :   Ok thanks very much! Cheers
Doctor :   The ultrasound scan will be the best way of confirming this.
Doctor :   Have you followed what I have suggested?
Doctor :   Do you have any other query?
User :   Yup. I will go ahead with the ultrasound.
User :   No that's it. Thanks
Doctor :   Thanks for consulting me. Bye for now. Wishing you Happy New Year and successful pregnancy.
