User :   For several years (4 or 5) I have had the problem of food getting stuck at the base of my throat. It happens ocassionally and usually passes down in a few minutes. However it is very painful and I cannot drink or swallow until it passes as this increases the pain. Two times in the past two months, I have regurgitated the food. I am fine afterwards and can eat anything and even swallow pills. I do tend to burp alot after an episode. I get very panicky during it. I also produce alot of thickened saliva which I spit out. I have alot of acid which I treat with antacids. I am now using pepcid AC to see if this will help. I sometimes get acid regurge at night. The internet is scaring the heck out of me as it keeps having ominous things to say, i.e. cancer etc. I am a hypochondriac and suffer from anxiety. I am a 59 year old female and have had no major health issues.
Doctor :   hello
Doctor :   give me a min let me read your query
User :   Hello
Doctor :   ok
Doctor :   so did you undergo any medical tests ?
User :   no as my doctor, last time I saw him, didn't feel like it was significant as it only happened every so often
Doctor :   ok
Doctor :   so besides this you have no other medical conditions ?
User :   I didn't really get scared by it until the regurg happened
Doctor :   high blood pressure or diabetes ?
User :   No nothing significant except anxiety type symptoms. My blood pressure is good except for white coat type and no diabetes. I do get acid and reflux with it sometimes at night
Doctor :   and what all medications are you on ?
User :   I take prosom at night for sleep and benedryl. I take inderol but only very rarely for sinus tach from anxiety, they say. I used to have to take librax on occassion for upper abdominal pain but that has gone away. That was also attrubuted to stress at the time. I just put myself on pepcid AC because my PA friend said tums were not a good idea for the acid reflux and I thought it might help this problem as well. I never have a problem if I chew properly and am not rushed or stressed.
Doctor :   do you consume alcohol ?
Doctor :   do you smoke ?
User :   trying very hard to get off the prosom...I know it's not a good idea. Don't drink or smoke and I exercise. I have gained a bit of weight. I am 5'5" and now weigh 140...118 is my best weight
User :   So obviously it hasn't affected my ability to eat!
Doctor :   that i can see
Doctor :   well now what i want you to do is
User :   glad you have a sense of humor
Doctor :   that you should now try taking PRILOSEC 20 MG
Doctor :   for a complete course of 14 days
Doctor :   once daily
User :   I just started the pepcid last night so, since I bought it already, can I try that? I was going to try 20mg twice a day for a month. I bought 25 of them so that's 12 days....I bought those because that is what has been recommended in the past and has worked
User :   for the acid
Doctor :   PRILOSEC is more stronger and more effective thats why i am recommending you
User :   is it over the counter as well?
Doctor :   also i want you to increase your consumption of yogurt
User :   I eat non fat plain yogurt with enzymes in it every morning
User :   would an additional probiotic help?
Doctor :   make sure you have one in the night too
Doctor :   yes sure it will
User :   you mean yogurt at night?
Doctor :   after supper
Doctor :   may 2 hours before you hit teh bed
Doctor :   the**
User :   okay, will does this sound acid related and can I quit stressing about cancer?
Doctor :   it acts as lining on your stomach. reducing the acid content
Doctor :   well its purely acid reflux
Doctor :   just take PRILOSEC 20 MG full 14 days course
Doctor :   and you will be fine
User :   and that causes the food getting stuck?
Doctor :   the reflux causes a spasm
User :   is the spasm worse when I am rushed or don't chew properly
Doctor :   yes sure
User :   and does this also cause the regugitated food that happened recently?
Doctor :   yes it can
User :   Okay, so should I expect, after finishing the meds that I would never have this or that I still need to monitor it and take meds as needed?
Doctor :   we will follow the approach of first 14 days of prilosec and then if the symptoms dont subside then you would have to undergo a upper ENDOSCOPY
Doctor :   lets hope the meds take care of the things as it does in majority of cases
User :   So, just to keep me from stressing too much, do I need to worry that they would be looking for something really serious?
Doctor :   be positive
Doctor :   and that will take care of more than half of your problems
Doctor :   and it requires no prescription either
User :   I'll try but I told you I'm a hypochondriac...not the type that wants to be sick....the type that wants reassurance that she's not
Doctor :   well i ASSURE YOU
Doctor :   dont worry
User :   Thanks! one more question (I think) It would seem that with such a long standing problem, I would or could expect to still have an ocassional problem. Am I suppose to go to a specialist if all the symptoms don't go completely away or am I looking for improvement.
Doctor :   you will be fine BUT in case you dont you need to see a GASTROENTROLOGIST
User :   okay but clarify that absolutely never another symptom or significant improvement?
Doctor :   it will improve tremendously
User :   I ask because I know myself and I will have the symptom if I think it's you get what I'm saying? If I can relax and not fear it, it's less likely to happen.....
Doctor :   well you need to relax
Doctor :   thats important
Doctor :   and you will be fine
User :   Okay, yeah I know that my panicking when the food doesn't go down has to be making it worse...I even get palpatations during it....though I KNOW that's stress!!
Doctor :   yes you need to relax and you will be fine
User :   time running out....thank you so much
Doctor :   your most welcome
Doctor :   take care
