User :   I'm 30 weeks pregnant and took a Probiotic supplement that contains Enterococcus faecium, and I'm worried about its effects on the fetus and would like a risk assessment, especially since I read on-line that it can cause neonatal meningitis. The ingredients in the supplement include a bacterial culture with 13 billion organisms, including
Lactobacillus rhamnosus, L. casel, L. acidophilus, L. plantarum, L. bulgaricus, L. salivarius, Enterococcus faecium, Streptococcus thermophilus, Bifidobacterium longum, and B. breve.
In addition to this, it contains 300 mg of Fructo-oligosaaccharides. (I took one supplement to stave off a yeast infection after a round of antibiotics.) Thank you so much for your help with this!
All the best,
Doctor :   hello
Doctor :   give me a min please
User :   Hi there, thanks for your help.
Doctor :   let me read your query
Doctor :   may i know your age please ?
User :   I'm 37.
Doctor :   and how many you took ?
User :   Just One.
Doctor :   just one capsule ?
User :   That's right.
User :   Should I take an antibiotic to counteract this?
Doctor :   well dont worry you have nothing to worry about, the dose you took is hardly any to cause any effect at all. and moreover use of probiotics is not completely contraindicated in pregnancy either
Doctor :   no please DONT take anything now to counter it
User :   Why would they include E. faecium in this supplement?!
User :   Is it possible that these bacteria crossed the placenta?
Doctor :   no not at all
Doctor :   one capsule will not cause any damage at all
Doctor :   dont worry
Doctor :   i assure you
User :   So, the bateria stays within my intestinal tract?
Doctor :   it must have already been long gone from your system
Doctor :   dont worry
User :   30 billion organisms sounds like a lot....
User :   I have noticed a change in my bowels...looser, etc.
Doctor :   yes it sure does but we take in probably 30 billions in a single breath , our body is a very protective machine
Doctor :   dont worry just never ever next time take any medications without first talking to you gynecologist
User :   Oops, 13 billion organisms. Well, I've read a lot of studies online that point to the benefits of probiotics during pregnancy. Is that accurate?
Doctor :   thats rule number one
Doctor :   its still in research phase
Doctor :   so it cant be said but yes there are no reported side effects
User :   Well, I spoke with three of the nurses at my OB's office, and they said it was okay, but one of them thought it was just an acidophilus supplement....
Doctor :   moreover 1 capsule is nothing the dose is too less to cause any damage
Doctor :   trust me you seriously dont have to worry about
User :   Wonderful! Thank you so much for your help!
