User :   my 3 month old baby has pneumonia, the nurse cant find a vein to inject him with antibiotics. they decided to give it to him on his arm. is that doable??does it result?

Doctor :   there are some antibiotics which can be given intramuscular and also intravenous , but some are strictly intravenous

Doctor :   i meant the name of the injection ( antibiotic )

Doctor :   strictly intravenous means , they have to be given into the vein only

Doctor :   pneumonia is very common illness in infants less than 1 years of age , need not worry

Doctor :   yes, it can be given into the muscle provided the baby has a good muscle mass

User :   cause they couldn't find his vein, as he is slightly chubby, so they gave it in his arm

User :   i understand that there is two types of pneumonia . the bacterial is curable by antibiotics what about the other one? how is ti curable?

Doctor :   well there are antiviral medications for the same
User :   they wr trying to get blood form him to find out which of the two he has, they couldn't do that , so they decided to give him the antibiotic...
User :   do you know of any medicine for Viral infection ,you could advise?
Doctor :   since the most common cause of the pneumonia is bacterial they are putting him on antibiotics empherically
Doctor :   i am sorry , i should not advice any prescription medicines on the chat , it is unethical to do so as i have not examined the baby
User :   ok so that the norm procedure.. how long do you think until the effect of the same will take place? will that also help his breathing & coughing?

Doctor :   the time taken to see the effect will depend on the severity of his condition
User :   should he stay in the hospital for at-least a week?
User :   or should the prescriptions be enough to take him home?
Doctor :   the duration of the hospitalization also depends on the severity

Doctor :   take care of the injection site as some could develop abscess due to irritants in the injection
User :   what should we look for and how do we help?
Doctor :   you may to observe whether there is any tenderness even after 2 days of injection , redness swelling
User :   and if so what shall we do?
Doctor :   you have o inform the pediatrician , he will take care by changing the antibiotics

User :   will the antibiotic kick-in immediately when given in muscle?
Doctor :   no ,it will take time and needs to attain a optimal concentration in the blood to show its action
User :   Is this (Pneumonia) a sign that he has a weak immunity system?

User :   my last concern... dont you think that all these medication can effect him some how? i worry about the mix of medication and not to forget that his last vaccination was given 2 weeks ago
Doctor :   Rocephin is a safe drug , need not worry
User :   one last thing. we took him to the his Dr. 10 dyas back when his fever was playing and he DR, will only ask us to give him panadol to reduce his fever and the result of a 10day wait is this...
User :   wasn't he suppose to cure him before we reach this stage? wasn't a simple cold curable to a 3 month old baby?
Doctor :   yes, it would be curable if he was examined well and the cause made out
