User :   Hello, shortly after dinner last night, I had watery diarrhea, vomiting and back and stomach aches that lasted all night. I just noticed that my diarrhea is maroon in color. I do not have a fever. We had chicken and shrimp for dinner, shared everything, and neither my daughter nor husband are sick.
Doctor :Hi
Doctor :   let me read your queyr
Doctor :   ** query
Doctor :   may i know where you reside ?
User :   Round Rock, TX. Just nor TX
Doctor :   the symptoms you have now could be due to food poisoning
Doctor :   specifically bacterial toxins
Doctor :   may i know how many episodes of diaahea have you had ?
User :   Probably close to 40 bouts since around 7:30 last night, and I have vomitted approximately 10 times
Doctor :   initially you can take medications like pepto bismol to reduce all your symptoms
Doctor :   also, take equalyte to help the electrolyte and fluid losses
Doctor :   In addition, adequate bed rest will give time for the condition to settle down
Doctor :   If symptoms like lethargy, fatigue, and weakness is very severe, then you may need medical attention for IV fluid administration and IV antibiotics
Doctor :   if you feel ok, and can manage yourself, then equalyte, pepto bismol, imodium may help to control the symptoms
Doctor :   Presence of blood in stools, or fever, unconcsiousness are critical signs that you need to watch out for.
User :   the diarrhea smells occult, is orange/maroon in color and appears to have skin sloughing in it? Also, my back pain is intense.
Doctor :   In that case, this seems to be dysentry induced by the bacteria
User :   For the record, I do have a history of I.B.S.
Doctor :   you will definitely need medical attention and IV antibiotics
Doctor :   this is different from symptoms of IBS
Doctor :   A FEW DOSES of antibiotics like flagyl, will control the infection and prevent from worsening
Doctor :   IBS does not cause skin sloughing or blood in stools
Doctor :   Are you there ?
User :   yes
Doctor :   I hope you have understood my commments
User :   just taking in all of this info, and am grateful to you for your help
Doctor :   ok
Doctor :   you are most welcome
User :   is the back pain related to dysentry as well?
Doctor :   may i know where exactly is the pain located ?
Doctor :   Upper or lower
Doctor :   right or left ?
User :   lower back, both sides, from the cosix (sp?) up to belly-button level
Doctor :   ok,
Doctor :   this is appears due to dysentery associated colitis
Doctor :   or enteritis
Doctor :   a stool test and culture will help to know the bacteria causing this
User :   is this contagious?
Doctor :   yes
Doctor :   this can be transmitted by feco-oral route
User :   what about saliva/breath or touch?
Doctor :   contamination of food by unclean hands can transmit the infection
Doctor :   no this is not transmitted by saliva, or breath or touch (clean unwashed hands)
Doctor :   i meant, not transmitted by clean washed hands
User :   so, my daughter and husband should not get it then, as long as they wash their hands thoroughly?
Doctor :   yes that is right
User :   when did i most likely contract it? (how long is incubation period?)
Doctor :   the IP lasts from 3-6 hours
Doctor :   you might have got infected after the seafood meals, you had yesterday
User :   we do not have medical insurance currently. what do you recommend? should we still see a doctor and get an IV? is there any way to get the antibiotic without seeing a doctor?
Doctor :   You can go to the ER and they can provide necessary treatment
Doctor :   and they cannot force you to pay, if u cannot
Doctor :   this is a legal protection provided under the EMTALA act
User :   ok. since i cannot keep any food or liquid down, should i take tylenol rather than ibuprofen for my back pain
Doctor :   yes, tylenol would be more helpful
Doctor :   in addition take Dramamine, an OTC medication to stop your vomiting and nausea
Doctor :   and prilosec to reduce acidity
User :   ok, so tylenol, dramamine, prilosec and pepto bismol? (in addition to antibiotic prescription we should get)?
Doctor :   yes , thats right
User :   will this go away if i take all of these otc drugs and do not start antibiotics?
Doctor :   the recovery without antibiotics will take more time
Doctor :   with antibiotics, the recovery will be much earlier
User :   ok, so there is no way around going to the ER.. darn
Doctor :   Im sorry, about that
User :   no, it's ok.
Doctor :   I hope i have cleared any doubts that you have
User :   yes, you have been excellent and have exceeded our expectations.
Doctor :   you are most welcome
Doctor :   thanks for consulting me here
Doctor :   take care and have a speedy recovery
User :   Thank you and best wished to you as well.
Doctor :   bye for now, have a good day
