On medication for diarrhea. How long should I use it? Will I get resistance to antibiotics if medication is stopped? - Online Doctor Chats
How can I help you?
i had consulted you before when i was suffering from diarrhea
Yes. I remember.
you had prescribed me nutroline b
nd it dint get cured in 2 days
so went to a physician
he had suggested me Zenflox oz
nd after 2 days
Ok. He started on antibiotic.
my friend got diarrhea
we had had some food together
so right now she is taking the same medicine
so my query
how many should we continue to have this?
if we stop in between will it come back?
You mean to say, how many days?
how many days
Antibiotic course is usually given for 5 days.
It gets resolved within one to two days.
and i read somewhere that side effect of zenflox oz as diarrhea
Still, you have to continue the antibiotic for 5 days, so that there is no resistance developed within your body to that antibiotic.
You have read it correctly.
so will that affect me?
I will give you a brief idea, how it happens.
It probably will not affect you.
Antibiotics work in two ways.
Either by killing the bacteria or by deactivating it.
Nowadays most of the antibiotics available kill the bacteria.
So when you take an antibiotic, it kills the bacteria which is causing you the problem.
Along with it, it also kills the normal beneficial bacteria which is present in your intestines.
tha's why he has suggested me VSL#3 also?
and one more question
Doctor had prescribed me OFLIN O tablet which came in a brown colur packet. I had this tablet for 2 days. When i went to the drug store to get it again they gave me zenflox oz. are they same?
will this cause an issue if i now start having Zenflox oz?
So, it would not cause any issue.
That is all doctor..
Thank you so much..
Hope I have cleared all your concerns.
one more query
Is there anything else I can help you on?
Sure, please proceed.
how will i develop resistance towards antibiotic if i dont continue it for 5 days
Let me explain.
Imagine you have a bacterial load of 5000 bacteria.
You take a tablet of Zenflox Oz
It will kill say around 50% of the bacteria.
But the remaining 2500 are also exposed to the medication.
But could not get enough of the medicine to kill them.
So when you take the next tablet, it will kill some of them.
Still some will remain.
Now, if you stop the medicine, there will be some bacteria which has been exposed to the medicine, but not killed.
They will modify themselves genetically, so that they do not get harmed by the same medicine again.
That is called development of resistance.
so these genetically modified bacterial will harm us again
So those bacteria which developed resistance , when producing more of bacteria, will all be resistant to that medicine.
In case, if these strain of bacteria attacks you some other time, the same medicine will not be enough to cure the disease then.
You will need a different antibiotic to treat.
yeah i got it..
Have you followed the explanation?
Tahnk u so much..
in general, imagine you becoming resistant to say 15- 20 antibiotics during different times.
When you get a infection later, we will need a high end antibiotic then.
that is the reason to avoid antibiotics unless necessary.
And when it is used, it has to be used to its full course.
Hope I could explain it to you in simple terms.
If you did not understand any part, I can guide you better.
Thank you very much..
Is there anything else I could help you on?
