User :   my wife has extreme OCD and has the fear of getting AIDS. if she threw a needle 5 years ago without getting stuck by it, is there any possibility that she could get aids from it? the needle was in our old garage for a minimum of 3 years before she found it when we tore our old garage down. how long can the virus actually live outside the body?

User :   can you see my question above?
Doctor :   it will not live long time outside
Doctor :
and also chances of getting aids after needle prick is very less 0.5 percent
User :   she was not pricked, just touched it when she threw it away
User :   any specifics besides not a long time outside body
Doctor :   just touching nothing will happen
User :   how long can aids live on an inanimate object
User :   like a paper towel, desk, door handle, etc
Doctor :
HIV will only survive for a couple of minutes at the very most.
Doctor :
HIV is fragile by nature and is also extremely sensitive to even small fluctuations in temperature and the presence of oxygen
User :   does water kill hiv
Doctor :

User :   again, she has extreme OCD and takes any precautions to avoid it. any final thoughts i can relay to her
User :   she practically lives in a bubble and i am trying to get her to realize that she cant get it from casual contact
Doctor :   regarding hiv,u can assure that nothing can happen to her by just touching the needle which is three year old

Doctor :   and hiv can never spread by usual contact

User :   she gets terrified if she sees blood on anything. she saw blood on a paper towel in the garbage of a public restroom and assumes the worst. she assumes the person had hiv and wiped the blood off of whatever and then touched the door handle
User :   everything you type she takes to heart, so whatever you got helps. she trust your opinion because of your medical background
Doctor :
good thatshe trusts me
Doctor :
hiv is mostly sexually transmitted
Doctor :
and also through blood only through needle prick
Doctor :   and if blood contact to cut wounds and direct injection or transfusion if infected blood
Doctor :

User :   any advice for extreme OCD treament?
Doctor :
is she taking any treatment?
User :   high dose of luvox not working
Doctor :
Doctor :
Cognitive behavioral therapy for obsessive compulsive disorder is highly effective. It is a type of therapy that focuses on changing thought patterns by altering behavior.
User :   thank you for all of your input
Doctor :   The patient will be gradually exposed to the obsession which causes fear and told not to engage in compulsive behavior..
Doctor :   With increased exposure, the patient will experience less and less anxiety as she realizes that nothing bad is happening. After ongoing treatment, 50% to 80% of patients cease all compulsive behavior
Doctor :   hi
Doctor :
u there
