User :   Hello, I fell and tried to break my fall w/ my L wrist, last 1/25---immediately did RICE, have barely used it since then; all through the last 19 days the pain has been 3.5 to 4 or 5, even w/o Advil; every day I am able to do a little bit more w/ it. When I fell I felt no tearing or popping, it was just jarring. In my entire life (I'm 51), I have never broken a bone, but I am loose jointed, and have had sprained ankles and knees, etc. I can be very patient when it comes to allowing it to heal, but there is still a little pain/stiffness and small bit of swelling at scaphoid, and I guess where extensor digitorum is (I looked it up!). I have no medical insurance at this time; I used to work in ER and Ortho clinic years ago so am trying to treat myself. Thank you!
Doctor :   Hi,
Doctor :   Let me read your query
Doctor :   Do you feel pain ( more ? ) when you extends your wrist ?
User :   Pls define extend---this always confuses me...!
Doctor :   moving your wrist away from the palm
User :   I'm still not sure what you mean---I can bend it forward, w/ palm heading towards wrist, and then bend it backwards, so both are almost perpendicular, w little pain, if i go slow and easy, but i know if I made a quick movement where I tried to move it normally, it would hurt
Doctor :   ok, i get it
Doctor :   try to pull the joint keeping the forearm fixed and tel me where do you feel pain
User :   You mean, grab my hand and pull straight out while not moving forearm, or pulling on th thumb?
Doctor :   right , do it slowly
User :   Ok, but the whole hand or thumb only?
Doctor :   better pulling the whole hand
Doctor :   this will localize the exact point of tenderness
User :   OK, I just did both, and i am feeling no pain...
Doctor :   good , after this i can conclude that thats there is only a minor strain in the joint
Doctor :   and can be treated well
Doctor :   do as follows
Doctor :   apply DICLOFENAC gel over the affected area
Doctor :   and roll over with a CREPE bandage for a week
Doctor :   and avoid taking oral pain killers
User :   Do I need a prescription for diclofenac?
Doctor :   No ,its an OTC
User :   OK, how long can I expect to take as far as healing, and when can i attempt some normal lifting, etc?
Doctor :   a week
Doctor :   not more than that if you fix the joint with crepe bandage
