User :   my query is whether connective tissue order disease is heridetary..
Doctor :   they can be inherited , but mot often they have no inheritence

User :   since my mother is suffering from multiple connective tissue disorder, and she has this pulmonary hypertensiom

User :   she is suffering form scleroderma
User :   and polymyositis

User :   also, in my mother's side..her sisters have arthritis..but she developed this it seems to me there is some kind of genetic connection..what do u think?
Doctor :   yes , it is possibile
Doctor :   as i said earlier , inheritance is possible though not very common

User :   my other query is does smoking cause heart problems?
Doctor :   yes , certainly it can cause heart problems

User :   also Dr. i wanted to ask one more thing

User :   my mother is been prescribed high dosages of steroids now

User :   and also she is also given cyclophosphamide pulse therapy every month
User :   she is on steroids 64 mg for almost 2 months now

User :   but we dnt see much physical improvemnt in her case
User :   her latest test reports seeems better as compared to earlier..but there is no improvement physically
User :   she is almost bed ridden..

User :   her problems started mid of last year..

User :   but doctors were not able to diagnoise it properly

Doctor :   since this a connective tissue disorder , autoimmune in nature
Doctor :   it is expected to have remissions and deteriorations
Doctor :   in common language , it will show on and off improvement and again gets worse
Doctor :   steroids and cyclophosphamide are the best treatment options proven so far
Doctor :   one cannot expect 100 percent cure fro this condition
Doctor :   i hope you have been informed that she needs to be on treatment for ever
User :   yeah..
Doctor :   the best we can do is , to continue the treatment on same lines
Doctor :   and help her out whenever her condition goes down
Doctor :   of course she will have better days
Doctor :   but it will take time and we need to be complaint with it
Doctor :   this is commonly in females and response varies form person to person
Doctor :   since she is receiving the best treatment , ideal to continue the same
Doctor :   it is nothing life threatening , so we need not worry to that extent , but i can understand that it needs to be given a lot of time

User :   but what I was informed earlier was that PH and absence of gag muscles are the two things whihc can prove fatal
Doctor :   yes , it can be fatal

Doctor :   but with good care and treatment , we can avoid it
Doctor :   or be cautious
User :   is theer any treatment to improve gag muscles
User :   she still has diffculrty in swallowing
Doctor :   as such the disease is not that fatal , that is what i meant to say
User :   particularly water...she starts coughing while taking water
User :   else she manages to eat diluetd/liquid food well
User :   is there any treatment to improve her gag muscles..?
Doctor :   there is no specific medicines to prevent it
Doctor :   nothing yet has been proved effective to prevent gag muscle conditions
User :   ohh okkk
Doctor :   we must be alert , and moderate solid feeds
User :   yeah we are taking care of that

User :   also even while on medication her overall condition can get worse?
User :   since after her treatment has started her condition is stable it didnt get worse as of now...its stable

Doctor :   do not worry beyond
Doctor :   as long as she is on medicines , the flare ups can be avoided
