User :   Am i lactose intolerant?
I am 22 years old, white, female. i have notices recently that i have had very bad wind and i am often bloated, i have been trying to find out what has been causing it thinking it could be the bread we were buying etc but i have noticed that its when i drink milk or eat cheese or other dairy products. when i do my stomach make awful noises and after about 30 - 45 mins i have really smelly gas :-S
could this mean i am lactose intolerant? my mum believes she is although she has never been to a doctor about it as dairy makes her throw up so there's no point in even trying to eat it
Doctor :   Hi
Doctor :   I am Dr.
Doctor :   Let me read the query
Doctor :   Give me a couple of minutes
User :   ok
Doctor :   Your description typically says that your gut is not tolerating the dairy products
Doctor :   Hence it is good to avoid the dairy products
Doctor :   I have few questions for you though
User :   ye
User :   *yes
Doctor :   Since when do you have this problem?
User :   i have had gas for about a year now and i have felt bloated for about 1 and 1/2
User :   but only in the last couple of weeks have i looked at what i could be eating to cause it
Doctor :   Did it start all of a sudden or gradually increasing and creating more problem now?
User :   i would say gradually as i cannot remember a time when it just started suddenly
Doctor :   Did you fell ill before the problem started?
User :   i was always tired but my doctor said there was nothing to worry about just stress maybe
Doctor :   Ok, try restricting dairy products for a month now and see if your problem improves
Doctor :   But if you restrict dairy products, you will have a calcium deficiency hence try to supplement calcium
Doctor :   by Calcium tablets, 500mg per day
User :   what shall i do after the month, say if i feel better, do i need to visit my doctor?
User :   ok
Doctor :   If you feel better then try to introduce very very slowly the skimmed milk variety
Doctor :   or soya
Doctor :   milk
Doctor :   If you get the problem once again stop it
User :   ok then
User :   i have put on a bit of weight over the last year or 2 could being lactose intolerant make you gain weight?
Doctor :   I find no exact relation between the two
User :   ok
Doctor :   But always a regular physical activity shall make you feel good about your diet
User :   if i am to cut out dairy what products will i have to avoid
User :   i have heard that bread and processed meat have lactose in them
Doctor :   You have to critically analyse each and every item you take and strike them off from your daily diet menu
User :   is it just lactose i look for?
Doctor :   Yes
User :   ok,thank you!
