User :   My Girlfriend usually gets her period once every 4 months and it usually lasts for about 2 weeks ... but this last time it lasted for about 5 weeks and she has been off of it for about a week but today she thinks that she is starting again ... im really concerned
Doctor :   hi
User :   hello
Doctor :   Dr. XXXXXXXX here.
Doctor :   let me read what you have typed
User :   hey AAAAAAA
User :   ok
Doctor :   please provide her age, occupation, height, weight, details of past medical illness and treatment if any
User :   18, she works in a office, 5'-2",120lbs
Doctor :   does she have any associated symptoms like cramps, altered blood color, nausea, breast soreness, mood changes etc?
User :   no none really just like a normal period just really long
Doctor :   ok. is this the first time she is having a longer period?
User :   longer than 2 weeks yes
Doctor :   was there any unprotected intercourse in between?
User :   no
Doctor :   i mean to ask was there any unprotected intercourse after her last normal period?
User :   no
Doctor :   is she on any birth control measures? if yes which one?
User :   no not currently she was put on birth control a couple of years ago to try to make her period more normal instead of 4 months but she isnt currently on any
Doctor :   ok.
Doctor :   i would recommend an examination by a gynecologist along with these following tests: Doctor :   1) pelvic ultrasound to look for any problems in ovary, uterus
Doctor :   2) hormonal analysis including FSH, LH, Prolactin, TSH to look for any hormonal abnormally causing longer bleeding.
User :   yes as soon as her mother comes back in town we are making her an appointment ... i was really concerned about what kind of serious problem could she be having
User :   ?
Doctor :   3) a complete blood count or a hemogram to make sure it not due to anemia.
Doctor :   since I am not examining her personally, I would not be able to tell the cause for it
Doctor :   the causes to look out for are anemia, hormonal imbalance, ovarian or uterine problems
Doctor :   which would be clear after the detailed examination and investigation, with correlation of findings of both.
Doctor :   have you followed what I have said?
User :   ... we are going to go see the doctor next week ... i was just wondering what kind of disorder she could have and if it is something to be seriously concerned with
Doctor :   since th ebleeding is continued for a long time with her periods starting again, she will feel weak due to the blood loss
Doctor :   *since the bleeding
Doctor :   so she has to be careful with her diet and
Doctor :   look out for symptoms like dizziness, fogginess etc, and
Doctor :   have someone with her to avoid falls
Doctor :   is there anything else I can help you with?
User :   not really ...
Doctor :   thanks for consulting me. bye for now.
