User :   I injured my hip yesterday and cannot go to the doctor until tomorrow soonest (I'm military at a base with out a base hospital, so Emergency Room visits have to be approved and must be true emergencies defined as "risk to life, limb, or eyesight if not treated with in 24 hours". I think it's a soft tissue injury, but the pain is moderate with out use, severe with use, and interfering with my sleep. Other than ice/rest is there anything I can do?
Doctor :   Hi
Doctor :   I am Dr.
User :   hi
User :   I think I have a soft tissue injury to my hip.
Doctor :   Let me read the query
Doctor :   Elevation, Rest is the primary thing any hospital does
Doctor :   No movement at all
Doctor :   Splinting is the best way
User :   how do I splint a hip?
Doctor :   I think you cannot do it yourself
Doctor :   You need a medic or trained First aid person in your base
User :   I am combat life saver qualified (step below medic). I've just never splinted a hip.
User :   usually dealing with knees or ankles.
Doctor :   Ok
Doctor :   Then do not manipulate
Doctor :   Just make sure you do not move it
Doctor :   or lie down on one side of the bed
Doctor :   The final point is you should not bear weight on it
User :   crutches?
Doctor :   I do not even advise that
Doctor :   unless an expert sees and assess the injury
Doctor :   Joint injuries are so importantly and immediately dealt that
Doctor :   if you fail it limps all life
Doctor :   Please do not manipulate, get help asap, rest, elevation and no wt bearing
Doctor :   or even hanging of the leg by crutches
User :   ok.
Doctor :   What is your age?
User :   26.
Doctor :   Ok, since you are young, you heal fast
User :   no. I don't.
User :   too many previous injuries.
Doctor :   Ok
User :   soonest I can go to the doctor is tomorrow, which I will. Any suggestions for sleeping tonight?
Doctor :   Sleep to the edge of the bed on the other side of the injury
Doctor :   Put a pillow below the injured the hip if you tend to move the other way during sleep
User :   acetaminophen for pain?
Doctor :   Actually it requires a traction to splint it
Doctor :   Yeah you can take MOTRIN double strenghth
User :   can't take motrin. stomach bleeding. tylenol?
Doctor :   Ok, then TYLENOL DS
Doctor :   If you have a help, ask for ice packs to be tied to numb the area
Doctor :   before you go sleep
User :   all I've got is a SAM splint. that wouldn't really help would it?
Doctor :   No
Doctor :   Requires a XXXXXXXX splint
User :   I know what that is, but I don't have one.
User :   or anything to reasonably make one.
Doctor :   I am just searching if a SAM splint can be made use
User :   If the joint was out of socket, it wouldn't bear weight at all, right?
Doctor :   yes
User :   that's what I thought.
Doctor :   Actually you can feel it on the lateral surface
Doctor :   the ball of it
Doctor :   All lower injuries require traction to splint it
User :   surfing accident. wave pushed me forward, but the drift current ripped the leg back, so it literally felt like my leg was being ripped off.
Doctor :   Ok
Doctor :   Do you feel any bulge near the joint area
User :   no.
User :   no bulges or discoloration. but the leg feels better and falls naturally rotated inwardly.
Doctor :   Ok
Doctor :   It looks to be a rotatory cuff injury of the hip
User :   ok.
Doctor :   I think you just go
Doctor :   how I said
User :   I think my time is almost up. ice, imobilize the joint, stay off it, and us crutches to get to the doctor tomorrow?
Doctor :   yes
User :   ok. can do.
Doctor :   Avoid hanging the injured leg too
Doctor :   unless necessary
User :   am I better w/ or w/o crutches? The only walking I'll have to do is to go to the clinic tomorrow.
Doctor :   If assistance is available with wheel chair
Doctor :   use it
Doctor :   otherwise crutches
User :   ok.
User :   that should get me through till tomorrow.
User :   thank you for your help.
Doctor :   Thank you for consulting me
