User : About eight months ago I had an episode. I was siting in class and started feeling a tingling and my legs and became extremely weak. I ended up having to walking out of a test because I felt so awful. I went to the doctor and he told me I either A) had a panic attack, or B) had low blood sugar. I had test run for diabetes and hypoglycemia, which both came back clean. At the time I had a pretty awful stomach ulcer as well, which I believe may have led my doctor back to the panic attack/ just stressed diagnosis. Since then I haven't gotten any better. I have never had problems with depression or anxiety before this. I eat, yet I lose weight. I'll eat and then 3 hours later I'll get light headed and weak. I can't sleep anymore. I have heart palpitations all the time. I have been told that it's all in my head so many times that I've started to believe that I am actually doing this to myself. I've done everything. Changed my diet, I was a gymnast for 8 years, so I've always excised regularly, I started meditating and trying do keep the little things from getting to me. The only thing is, I'm still feeling weird! I am sore all the time. I sweat and have nervous spells. What are the chance that I might have Graves disease or hyperthyroidism? Thyroid problems run on both sides of my family. Could this maybe be the root of all my problems?
Doctor : Hi

Doctor : Inform your Doc about the family history
User : He has run test and said everything looks normal
Doctor : in your next visit
User : He ran a blood test and told me I was stressed. Thats it.
Doctor : Then as your Doc says- everything does seem
Doctor : to be in your head
Doctor : When was your last vacation?
User : I went to XXXXXXXX last summer
Doctor : For how many days?
User : 4 or 5
Doctor : How were those days
Doctor : same as the others or
Doctor : did it help forget
Doctor : your problems?
User : They were fine, but that was before I had symptoms
User : I started getting this way In the fall
Doctor : Then the time has come for another long vacation
User : It's not stress
Doctor : Change in environment & situation will help you to forget whatever you are experiencing
User : I know it sounds like it, and everyone keeps telling me it is, but there is no reason for me to be getting light headed and almost fainting just because I don't eat for a few hours
User : even when I go out with friends I feel bad
Doctor : Thinking that one is ill inspite of being absolutely normal, is a kind of stress
Doctor : You need a vacation or something really serious to do(some kind of project) or a psychiatrist
User : i have never had anything wrong with me. I have always been happy. I am loosing weight now matter what I eat and getting weak to being on the verge of fainting on a weekly basis.
User : this is not in my head
User : even on my days off, when im just sitting around the house with family I dont feel right
User : I feel like im in a cloud
User : I get shaky hands
User : my heart races
User : I know it just sounds like a panic attack, or anxiety, but I am a happy person. I dont smoke or drink either
User : after the doctor told me it was stress i started taking 15mg daily of %-HTP
User : 5-htp
User : It hasn't done anything
User : so i bummped it up to 25mg. nothing
User : its hasn't helped with depression, because I'm not depressed
Doctor : Diagnostic tests are the confirmatory tools to diagnose illnesses, if the right tests are done & they turn out to be normal, then the person is said to be normal
User : I understand
Doctor : Then whats left to be done is a psychiatric evaluation
User : based on what I am telling you, don't you think that these things could be brought on by an overactive thyroid?
Doctor : Was the thyroid profile done?
Doctor : In case it was normal, repeat it for assurance
User : I dont know what has been done. I blood test was done and my doctor said everything looked fine. I am going to a new doctor soon because I don't trust my old one and all i want to know is whether or not you think that these symptoms, outside of testing, might be congruent with those of someone who has hyperthyroidism.
User : Just humor me and pretend like you don't think that there is anything wrong with me psychologically, even if you do
Doctor : Definitely these symptoms do occur in hyperthyroidism.
Doctor : Its a good decision to take a second opinion\
User : would someone being my age be at risk?
Doctor : Yes
Doctor : Since you confirmed to me that all tests have been done & they are normal, I had to think of psychiatric illness
User : Both grandmothers had hyper, a few aunts had hyper and hypo. Do you think that I may have a good chance of developing this disease. I understand that you are taking the same route as everyone else who has seen me. My friends and my family have told me its
Doctor : In case the thyroid profile has not been done, then there is no way to jump to diagnosing you with psychiatric illness
User : all in my head, too, along with my doctor. But a few of my family members know exactly what Im going through and after radium treatment or other types of treatment they were okay again
Doctor : So do you want me to tell you what you already know-
Doctor : Yes ofcourse you are at risk
User : One blood test was done. I'm not sure what exactly was seen or looked for. My doctor has "communication" problems
User : I'm scared. I have never worried like this in my life.
Doctor : I am repeating this again, if the thyroid profile has not yet been done then there is no way
Doctor : one can label you
User : I
Doctor : as not having hyperthyroidism.
User : I'm not looking for a diagnosis here. I know that the right test need to be run and there is only so much that can be done via the internet
Doctor : Its a very simple thing, just one blood test & you will know whether you have hyperthyroidism or not
User : What are my options if in fact I do have hyperthyroidism?
Doctor : First confirmation & then the treatment options
User : what are current treatment options
Doctor : For confirmation- Thyroid profile, scan, FNAC
Doctor : Treatment- is based on test results, line of treatment will be decided by your Endocrinologist/treating doctor
Doctor : have you followed what I have said?
User : Yes.
Doctor : is there anything else I can help you with?
User : Im just curious. Do you believe that I need psychological evaluation?
Doctor : first go ahead with the work-up suggested, of everything comes back as normal (or within normal ranges) then you might need to think about a psychological/psychiatric evaluation
Doctor : have you followed what I have said?
