User:3weeks ago I swallowed fish bone (2cm), after swallowing 2 days after , I did endoscope.
there was not any fishbone in stomach.
What I want to know is according to the article sharp fishbone is tend to perforate the small bowel.
Althogh it is very rare.
How can I know is fish bone stuck in anywhere in bowel or is it finished?
Doctor:I see that you swallowed a fish bone
Doctor:Are you in alot of pain in your tummy riht now?
User:No.... but
Doctor:please continue.. but what>
User:What I concern is according to the article The averager date from digest to perforation is 10day..
User:Also it could be more delay...
Doctor:The chances that it will perforate are remote. Remember, the body can break down even soft bones
Doctor:Now that the endoscopy is done. There is nothing to worry about, it's not stuck in the stomach and can't wear a hole in the lining
User:What I concern is small bowel.
User:is there any symptom can I know if stuck in bowel?
Doctor:Average clearance through small bowel is 6-8 hours. Nothing can get stuck in there
Doctor:by now the bone has been broken down and thrown out
Doctor:the symptoms of a small bowel perforation would be catastrophic pain, fever and a ridgid, board like abdomen which you wouldn't allow anyone to touch
Doctor:The chances of this happening at this point approach zero though.
Doctor:So no worries.
User:Sorry to ask again. If fish bone stuck in bowel (before perforation), Could I know?
Doctor:Not really, the inside of the bowel doesn't have nerve endings like your skin does
Doctor:You can't feel anything from the inside of the bowel unless there is ALOT of stretching .. or god forbit a perforation to the outside
User:it is almost 3weeks ago, Do you think is there any chance to stuck in bowel?
Doctor:No chief. I think your gonna be just fine.
Doctor:The bowel works way faster than that. It sheds its ENTIRE lining every 3 days
User:Last question...
User:I think fish bones are all sharp.... but almost swallowing fish bone has no problem, but sometimes perforation.... Why?
Doctor:It's because your GI system is made of muscles, wrapped in layers around one another.
Doctor:if any sharp object starts irritating it, the GI systems 'peristaltic' activity (fancy way of saying wave like motion) will move the object and reorient it so it dosn't poke anymore
Doctor:you'd have to swallow a ninja star for it to guarantee perforation
Doctor:bevause no matter how you orient one of those things, there will be a sharp edge against the bowel
Doctor:I hope that makes sense
User:Thank you very much. Bowel also have a muscle like that of stomach?
Doctor:absolutely. The entire system is a complex layering of muscles
Doctor:all the way from esophagus to colon. :-)
User:Thank you very much...Have a nice.....
Doctor:You have a wonderful day too. Take care.
